We are seeking an outstanding senior professional with experience in applying human rights principles in a complex organisational context for a parental leave cover role as the Director, Modern Slavery Unit.

Reporting to the Executive Director, Office of Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, this hands-on and faced paced role is accountable for leading and managing the Modern Slavery Unit which is responsible for:

  • collaboratively developing the University’s strategic response to addressing modern slavery risks, and other human rights risks
  • driving engagement with key stakeholders across the University’s operations, supply chains and investments, and controlled, and affiliated entities.
  • ensuring the University meets its modern slavery reporting obligations, community expectations, and the University’s broader strategic agenda.
  • developing the capability of staff across the University’s operations to identify, mitigate and manage modern slavery risks.
  • developing policy, procedures and implementing risk assessments and risk identification methodologies.

The Director, Modern Slavery Unit is responsible for leading the University’s strategic response to its modern slavery reporting obligations. This hands-on, fast paced role includes leading the operationalising, implementing, University-wide initiatives that will enable the University to demonstrate due diligence best practice and thought leadership on modern slavery due diligence.

The Director is also responsible for preparing the University’s annual modern slavery statement and securing the appropriate approvals from the University Executive and the University Senate.

About you

The successful candidate will have strong senior stakeholder management skills and a demonstrated ability to collaborate with and influence executive-level stakeholders. They will have demonstrated experience leading teams and effectively leading and managing a strategic and diverse program of work across a complex organisation. With knowledge of the higher education sector, you will possess personal attributes of openness, diplomatic tact, commitment to excellence and quality, and a high level of initiative.

The role requires demonstrated experience identifying and mitigating operational, strategic, and reputational risks related to modern slavery and other human rights risks, across complex operational settings and in a diverse and complex stakeholder context. You will have demonstrated experience in applying human rights principles in a complex organisational context in line with recognised standards and guidelines such as the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, together with experience providing expert, strategic evidence-based advice to senior executive staff, on highly complex issues, to support informed decision making, policy development and pragmatic policy and operational solutions.

The successful candidate will possess relevant tertiary qualifications in a relevant field such as public policy, international development, human rights, business, management, social sciences and/or equivalent combination of relevant training and experience. Postgraduate qualifications will be highly regarded. You will have proven management experience at a senior level; together with flexibility, capacity to adapt to changing circumstances and environments and, when necessary, navigating through ambiguity.

Term and remuneration

The successful candidate will be offered a 13-month appointment. The successful candidate will also be offered an attractive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.

Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the reasons for the position.

Similarly, your ongoing employment is conditional upon the satisfactory maintenance of all relevant clearances and background check requirements.
