DePauw University seeks a Director for Annual Giving Programs who will be responsible for providing strategic direction, as well as the execution of a comprehensive annual operating plan, for one of the nation’s leading liberal arts colleges. DePauw boasts an engaged and philanthropic alumni base comprised of alumni, parents, and friends of the University with a common passion for providing students with an unparalleled experience in the spirit of the best liberal arts traditions.

The Director for Annual Giving Programs will join at an exciting time as the University nears its 200th anniversary having served thousands of students in their educational pursuits. In advance of this milestone, the University has also launched the DePauw Bold & Gold 2027 Strategic Plan. Leadership envisions DePauw as a new model for a 21st-century liberal arts and sciences university and an institution that prepares students to be contributing members of society with leadership, creativity, and service.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director for Annual Giving Programs directs communications, services, and solicitation activities that engage and encourage relationship building through the participation of alumni, students, faculty, staff, parents, and friends of the University to successfully increase annual philanthropic support while advancing the greater development and campaign goals of the University. Engaging in collaboration with the Development and Alumni Engagement team, campus partners, and alumni constitutes a vital aspect of the responsibilities undertaken by the Director of Annual Giving Programs. The Director actively participates in the development and implementation of communications, programs, and events to engage and connect alumni with the University and support activities to further pipeline development.

The Director for Annual Giving Programs will work collaboratively with Alumni Engagement, Major Gifts and Development Services to direct communications, services, and solicitation activities that engage and encourage the participation of alumni, students, faculty, staff, parents, and friends of the University to successfully increase annual philanthropic support and participation aligned to advancing the greater development and campaign goals of the University.

A hybrid work environment is available for this position. A minimum of three days per week is expected in the office.

Essential Functions Statement(s)

• In coordination with leadership and peers, make and manage decisions about strategies, solicitation methods, segmentation, and timing as well as collaboration points with the alumni engagement team.
• Devise new programs and marketing to enhance the annual fund program of the institution, including participation levels and the implementation of the Bold & Gold Strategic Plan.
• Meet quarterly and yearly fundraising goals set by the Associate Vice President and Vice President.
• Work with Development Services to create a suite of reports to track and analyze donor behavior year-over-year and over time.
• Collaborate effectively with the Leadership Annual Giving officer, including the establishment of metrics that align with the objectives of the program.
• Create, implement, and evaluate comprehensive annual and multi-year plans that engage prospects and new donors, acquire new donors, retain and celebrate current donors, and renew past donors.
• Develop annual giving and alumni/donor relations strategies that support the greater University Advancement and University, mission, and campaign goals.
• Develop, analyze, and present informational and statistical/financial reports to the department, division, campus administration, volunteer boards, and other constituents.
• Work with Donor Relations in regard to stewardship for annual giving donors.
• Responsible for contributing toward Development and Alumni Engagement goals while adhering to the organization’s values and supporting the mission of the University.
• Work with the Alumni Board and GOLD Alumni Board Advancement committees.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

Education: Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) from a four-year college or university required.

Experience: Seven or more years of progressive professional experience in a related field is required, preferably with at least five years at an academic institution and a corresponding track record in fundraising or a related field in higher education.

Other Requirements:

• The highest regard for quality control and a focus on outstanding “customer service.”
• Experience with integration of the annual fund into an organization’s greater fundraising goals and ability to be flexible in working independently as well as collaboratively with development units.
• Experience working independently and in collaboration with other staff handling multiple diverse projects.
• Excellent written communication skills.
• Leadership, managerial, and supervisory skills, and track record of success in leading and mentoring a staff of fundraising professionals.

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

• Ability to guide and contribute toward the process and approach for volunteer management of the class and affinity-based philanthropy volunteers.
• Ability to work with high-level University administrators, faculty, and volunteers.
• Ability to design, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive annual giving program, establishing goals and objectives that translate into operating plans and appropriate staff assignments and resource allocation.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• High level of initiative, attention to detail, and organizational skills; ability to successfully direct multiple projects on tight deadlines and under pressure.
• Ability to provide direction and to motivate, develop, and educate professional and support staff through communication, modeling appropriate behavior, optimism, and high achievement.
• A high degree of energy, creativity, flexibility, organization, and interpersonal skills as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
• Must be able to work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues.
• Must be able to travel and work outside of regular office hours.

• Should possess the ability to handle and work with data.
• Should possess knowledge of various solicitation vehicle spaces, encompassing both digital and print formats.

PREFERRED SKILLS:

• Ability to use Give Campus or similar platforms
• Blackbaud experience
• Adobe Creative Suite
• Google tools
• Email production tools (iMods, etc.)

Communication/Language: Intermediate: Ability to read and interpret documents. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Math Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Computer Skills: Computer proficiency (including Microsoft Office) and ability to learn new programs.
