Introduction
The Green Climate Fund is the world’s largest dedicated multilateral climate fund and invests in impactful, innovative, catalytic programs and projects in developing countries across the globe. By the end of 2023, GCF had a portfolio of 243 projects in 129 countries, committing a total of USD 13.5 billion to date. 

In 2023, an additional USD 12.8 billion was pledged, to support our new strategic and programming cycle from 2024-2027; our ambition is to grow to become at least a USD 50 billion fund by 2030. Position Objective
The Director of Communications, reporting to Chief Strategy and Impact Officer, is responsible for articulating and implementing a communication strategy to establish GCF as a key global actor in climate action. S/he ensures that external and internal narratives are consistent and aligned and actively supports the internal changes necessary to the delivery of the Fund’s strategic goals. The Director of Communications at GCF has a unique opportunity to influence climate action efforts by leading a talented team and crafting compelling narratives that raise awareness, build support and amplify the impact of GCF’s mission on a global scale.

 

Purpose 

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy and related tools and guidance to promote GCF through compelling results-oriented communication including print, digital and social media engagement;
  • Develop and implement a branding strategy that includes tools and templates to promote a coherent and compelling brand identity of GCF;
  • Support the evolution of the Fund’s culture and the delivery of key initiatives through a systematic approach to change management and stakeholder engagement.
  • Lead a team of communication professionals across various areas, including digital communications, media relations, and internal communications.
  • Oversee the creation and distribution of high-quality content across multiple platforms and languages, including the GCF website, social media channels, and publications.
  • Ensure effective narratives that showcase the impact of GCF’s work in developing countries.

 

Engagement

  • Advise management on communications and reputational risk management issues;
  • Establish and maintain relationships and partnerships with media and relevant counterparts in partners, including contributors, National Designated Authorities, Accredited Entities and Readiness Delivery Partners, to promote the Fund.
  • Promote GCF’s engagement in key global campaigns on climate action.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with international and local media outlets and journalists.
  • Secure impactful media coverage for GCF’s work and initiatives.
  • Manage media inquiries and act as a spokesperson for GCF on relevant issues.

Delivery

  • Oversee strategic communication plans maximizing GCF priority areas and achievements, global milestones/events and the roll-out of high-quality multi-media communication tools and materials – print and digital.
  • Establish mechanisms, procedures and tools to provide timely support to internal clients to communicate GCF’s priorities and achievements.
  • Guide the development and implementation of standard operating procedures for quality assurance of key communication products for public dissemination.
  • Oversee internal communications to encouraged sharing of information and cross- Secretariat collaboration, as well as collaboration within GCF including the Independent Units.
  • Utilize internal communication channels (e.g., intranet, newsletters) to foster a culture of transparency and collaboration.
  • Manage the Communications department, including overseeing and managing the work of the team, effective use of human and financial resources; training, motivating and coaching staff, evaluating performance, advising on career development.
  • Track the effectiveness of communication campaigns and measure key performance indicators aligned with GCF strategic goals.
  • Analyse data and adjust communication strategies to maximize impact.

 

Requirements (Education, experience, technical competencies required of the job)

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree), in particular in communications, media, public administration, international relations, social sciences, or related fields; A First Level University degree with additional 2 years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the Master’s degree requirement
  • Deep understanding of digital communications strategies and best practices and experience with content management systems and social media platforms.
  • At least 15 years of relevant and progressively responsible professional experience in communications, with at least 10 years at an appropriate managerial level and at least 5 years at the international level;
  • Established track record in political communications and establishing relations with senior politicians and policy-makers;
  • Relevant work experience in multilateral organizations, international development and/or non-governmental organizations;
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated experience in leading and managing high performing teams;
  • Experience in climate change, sustainability and international development issues is an advantage;
  • Fluency in both written and spoken English; knowledge of one or more other languages is desirable;
  • High level of commitment to values of inclusion and sustainable development.
