The Department of Structural Biology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is seeking an exceptional candidate for the role of Director of the Cryo-EM Center.
The Department of Structural Biology has made substantial investments in state-of-the-art cryo-EM technology and aims to leverage these recent acquisitions to pioneer transformative advancements in structural biology. Recent expansion of the Cryo-EM Center provides the opportunity to acquire additional capital instrumentation, to enhance current capabilities in single-particle analysis (SPA), and to establish innovative cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) workflows.
The Cryo-EM Director must have outstanding technological achievements and deep familiarity with state-of-the-art instrumentation. The ideal candidate will command expert knowledge of the cryo-EM field, be knowledgeable about cutting-edge advances, and be compelled by a personal vision for the future of cryo-EM technology developments. Candidates should have significant experience with cryo-EM/SPA and/or cryo-ET.
The Director of Laboratory Operations of the Cryo-EM Center will have a leading role in expanding the Cryo-EM Center and will oversee the acquisition, installation, maintenance, and operation of existing and future equipment. They will establish center-wide policies and workflows for equipment operation and usage.
Under their leadership will be a team of senior scientists whose responsibilities include consulting, training, and assisting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital scientists with their cryo-EM related research. There will be generous support for conference travel as well as professional development.
Facility directors in the Structural Biology Department at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital enjoy freedom and independence to innovate in methods development and to collaborate with faculty across St. Jude.

Since its inception in 2017, the Cryo-EM Center has been built up to include: two Titan Krios 300 kV (including new coldFEG Krios G4 equipped with SelectrisX energy filter and a Falcon 4i DED), one 200kV Talos Arctica (equipped with BioQuantum Energy filter and a K3 DED), and a Talos L120C. Moreover, the Center is supported by the high-performance computing facility at St. Jude, with 48 A100 (80GB) GPUs and 40 V100 (16 GB) GPUs dedicated to cryoEM data processing and ample storage. Cryo-ET related equipment includes the Zeiss Crossbeam 550 FIB-milling instrument with a cryo-lift out module, Quorum stage for sample transfer and an LSM 900 microscope with a dedicated Linkham stage for CLEM.

Minimum Education and/or Training:
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant scientific area is required
Minimum Experience:
- Twelve (12) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required
- Ten (10) years of relevant post-degree experience is required with a Master’s degree
- Eight (8) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required with a PhD
Compensation
In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $114,400 – $216,320 per year for the role of Director of Cryo-EM Center.
