What is The Truman Center and Truman National Security Project? 

Truman Center for National Policy, a 501(c)(3), works in tandem with the Truman National Security Project, a 501(c)(4), (together “Truman”) to unite and equip a diverse community of American leaders to produce innovative and principled solutions to complex national security challenges. What is the opportunity? 

Reporting to the President / CEO, the Director of Development serves as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions that impact the organization. In partnership with the President / CEO, this position is responsible for all fundraising activities. The successful candidate will help forge new relationships to build Truman’s visibility, financial resources, and impact. The Director of Development will also be responsible for implementing a strategic development plan to grow an approximately $3 million budget and specifically, substantially increase unrestricted gifts from individual donors.

The Director of Development will expand and diversify Truman’s donor base/pipeline and work closely with other team members to secure funding for new initiatives. It is expected that the amount of major and multiyear gifts raised from individuals, corporations and foundations will increase in future years as the Director of Development systematically and effectively strengthens the organization’s overall fundraising capacity.

 

Responsibilities

Fundraising Strategy and Operations (25%)

  • Work with the President / CEO to develop and implement a plan for integrated resource development, diversifying current revenue sources, including individual donors, corporate giving, and foundation support. Create and oversee an annual fundraising plan to support these efforts;
  • Evaluate Truman’s fundraising strategies and set new goals each year to create a donor-centered and segmented fundraising approach to better meet Truman’s mission and organizational objectives;
  • Review and evaluate current development operations and, if necessary, restructure them, according to industry best practices including current trends and tactics, detailed data management, analytics, timely acknowledgements, as well as clear reporting for the board and funders;
  • Create and implement a phased plan to build a Truman’s fundraising program, including progressive higher fundraising goals, additional staff, and further board engagement in fundraising.
  • Create and maintain appropriate donor relationship management tracking and reporting activity in Salesforce, and ensure that donor cultivation and solicitation strategies are successfully implemented, and development goals are met.

Donor Engagement (50%)

  • Work closely with the President / CEO to develop, implement, and manage an individual giving program. Track and build the institution’s pipeline to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual major gifts prospects;
  • Build and manage a donor portfolio that includes lapsed Truman donors and new individual prospects. Build and cultivate relationships, solicit gifts at all levels;
  • Identify and cultivate new donors and steward existing donors in partnership with the President / CEO and Board Members;
  • Identify, cultivate, and solicit support from corporations and foundations whose interests align with Truman. Create a high level bespoke set of offerings to attract and retain corporate and foundation donors;
  • Represent Truman at external events as needed.

Cross-Organizational Collaboration (25%)

  • Communicate regularly with the President / CEO and other Senior Team members on department activity, fundraising meeting preparations, and pipeline review;
  • Partner with the Policy & Program and Community & Impact teams and support their engagement with foundation donors and prospects. Help ensure quality and timely funder deliverables;
  • Drive fundraising for the organization, serving as a motivational force in fundraising efforts across Truman staff;
  • Collaborate closely with the Communications Team and Senior Team on all development-related marketing materials and communications that impact funders and prospects; build strategic and compelling “Case for Support”;
  • Partner with the VP of Finance and Talent on the annual budget process and goal setting process. Collaborate regularly to ensure strategic thinking around fundraising budgets;
  • Support events and other programs and activities of the Board, President / CEO and Senior Team  related to the mission and activities of Truman;
  • Participate in the preparation of and attend TruCon, held annually. Preparation includes identifying and soliciting sponsors for TruCon and crafting donor engagement opportunities throughout the conference.

 

Qualifications

  • An authentic passion for Truman’s mission.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit eager to take on new challenges and try new approaches.
  • An engaging and relational fundraiser.
  • 5 plus years of fundraising experience including demonstrated success in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting individual gifts. Experience working with Foundations and Corporations is a plus.
  • Tangible experience expanding and cultivating existing donor relationships over time.
  • Sound judgment and a professional approach to decision-making, particularly in fast-paced environments and changing external landscapes .
  • A professional and resourceful style; the ability to work independently and as a team player, to take initiative, to manage a small team, and to track multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Strong organizational, time management, written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail.
  • The ability to interact and engage comfortably with stakeholders across our community including Board Members, donors, prospects, and members.

Details: 

  • Ability and willingness to travel.
  • Ability to work occasional flexible hours to support events and programs.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, CFRE preferred. Relevant experience may be substituted for a degree.

Location:

Washington, D.C.  This is a hybrid position, working in the office on average two days a week.

 

Compensation:

This is an outstanding opportunity for a highly motivated professional to assume a pivotal role in the evolution of a fast-growing, highly respected organization. We are seeking an individual of outstanding quality with a respected track record. Truman’s starting salary for this position is $117,000.
