Position description

The Director of Development plans, directs and coordinates fundraising activities for major and planned giving prospects and donors focused on the East coast of the United States, with a particular focus on the Mid-Atlantic/Washington DC market.

A member of a national Individual Giving team, the Director is part of a national major gift strategy group and will report directly to a Senior Director of Development and work in the Washington DC office of CARE, USA. Additionally, the Director and their supervisor will partner closely with the Executive Director who manages the East coast team.

The Director works with individual high net worth donors and family/private foundations to secure funding for CARE’s mission through unrestricted/flexible funding, restricted/designated gifts focused on CARE’s core programs, planned gifts, and support all campaigns. This role will focus on current donors and be expected to work with prospects and secure new donors. The Director will be responsible for developing and implementing cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for his/her portfolio of donors/prospects.

The Director is expected to maintain an active schedule of personal visits with donors and initiate one on one engagement and solicitation opportunities with donors and new prospects.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

FUNDRAISING & STEWARDSHIP

  • Manage an active and dynamic portfolio of approximately 100-150 donors and prospects.
  • Develop and implement strategic engagement and solicitation strategies for both donors and prospects.
  • Solicit outright gifts of $10K+ with a goal of focusing on gifts of $25k+ to meet (or exceed) annual and quarterly fundraising goals.
  • Working with Planned Giving colleagues to support the endowment campaign and cross-team collaboration goals.
  • Working with the Major Gifts team and other CARE partners steward donor gifts with formal and informal updates and impact reports on gifts secured.
  • Creatively and thoughtfully build meaningful connections and relationships between donors and the organization, serving as a bridge, partner and liaison between funders and CARE.
  • Responsibly and thoroughly keep donor records and pipelines updated in CARE’s CRM, Salesforce as a basic function of strong donor management.

COMMUNITY BUILDING & PROSPECTING

  • Support a community-building strategy that fosters meaningful relationships, learning, and peer-to-peer connections for major donors in key markets, including CARE On Capitol Hill.
  • Serve as the Major Gifts team liaison for DC specific opportunities like the CARE National Conference, etc. Establish a strong partnership with the DC based Advocacy team.
  • Participate in DC market strategy sessions.
  • Actively securing and engaging new-to-CARE donors is a key expectation for this role to grow the funding from this region for CARE’s work.

INTERNAL COLLABORATION

  • Partner closely and directly with other CARE teams (Advocacy, Planned Giving, Prospect Management, Grants Coordination) to stay apprised of opportunities to build relationships with key and influential donors and investors

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years professional experience in a fundraising role
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Familiarity with all aspects of fundraising concepts, including Planned Giving, Major Gifts and stewardship functions
  • Passion and commitment for CARE’s mission and values
  • A creative thinker with proven ability to produce and manage multiple events at one time.
  • A self-starter, detail oriented, well- organized and able to plan and execute events from conception to completion.
  • Has excellent communication and writing skills, good judgment and discretion, and the ability to successfully interact with donors, board members, guest speakers and staff at all levels of the organization.
