Director of Development, Corporate Philanthropy

 

The ASU Foundation (ASUF) fosters partnerships between ASU and
like-minded individuals, corporations and foundations who believe
in ASU’s mission and provide resources for ASU to manifest its
charter into meaningful impact.   

 

The Director of Development, Corporate Philanthropy is a senior
fundraising professional with strong development experience who
implements and executes innovative strategies alongside the AVP of
Corporate Philanthropy to identify, cultivate, and solicit support
from major corporate partners in meaningful and sustained ways.
This person plans, stewards, and solicits corporate gifts ranging
from corporate foundation grants to other streams of funding to
secure and increase significant philanthropic support in
partnership with other ASUF development staff, deans and/or faculty
and campus leadership aimed at assuring long-term financial support
for the ASU Foundation and Arizona State University. This position
is joining a nimble yet growing team during a university-wide
campaign launch.

 

 

What you’ll do: 

  • Creates and leads a coordinated program of fundraising and
    engagement activities designed to increase the number and level of
    annual corporate gits; sets approach in partnership with AVP of
    Corporate Philanthropy’s vision in assigned areas of responsibility
    including businesses, corporations, and corporate foundations

  • Manages a corporate donor/prospect portfolio with a primary
    focus on securing gifts at a variety of levels with a personal
    fundraising goal of at least $2M annually in accordance with
    performance metrics

  • Develops and executes strategies to involve campus leaders,
    alumni, friends, and volunteers to identify and cultivate new
    corporate, institutional and/or foundation prospects

  • Directs collaboration and partnerships with various faculty,
    institute/center directors, and unit-based fundraisers to leverage
    the maximum philanthropic potential of corporate prospects with a
    focus on working across units to build bridges and increase pitches
    and proposals in innovative ways

  • Guides the direction of written proposals, white papers,
    strategic plans, budgets, and other collateral materials as needed
    for securing significant ($100k+) philanthropic investments; works
    alongside university thought partners

  • Prioritizes a high level of collaboration with both internal
    departments and broader University partners to identify common
    goals and develop, execute, and advance prospect and donor
    strategies and increase participation among high-profile donors
    (i.e., alumni engagement, annual giving, corporate and foundation
    relations, development, donor relations, estate and gift planning,
    financial services, research, and prospect management)

  • Ensures the proper stewardship and recognition of donors in
    portfolio with appropriate cadence including attending appropriate
    community events, hosting on-campus meetings, and convening
    partners and coalitions

  • Manages projects with moderate oversight; may serve as a project
    manager or point person for some complex, multilayered,
    university-wide proposals aimed at raising larger, multi-tiered
    gifts

  • Consistently seeks out recurring and new corporate foundation
    grant opportunities; maintains a database of opportunities with
    requirements and deadlines; project manages corporate opportunities
    across academic units often serving as the main point of contact
    and/or co-manager with academic leads

  • Ensures compliance with prospect management guidelines for
    tracking and maintenance of contact and progress reporting to
    corporate partners; assists across foundation teams with corporate
    reporting

  • Manages budget related to area of assignment ensuring a maximum
    return on university investments while controlling expenses

  • Serves on pertinent pan-university committees and working
    groups, and contributes ASUF perspective and support to peers
    working in corporate engagement locally, statewide, nationally, and
    globally

  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge on key alumni in corporate
    leadership roles, oversees continuous research, development, and
    up-to-date knowledge on prospects, and works with other areas to
    coordinate contacts

  • Executes team strategy and contributes to a new, growing team
    with ambitions to grow corporate philanthropy across ASUF and ASU
    in a sustainable and impactful way

  • Participates as a member of the ASUF development team and serves
    as a resource to development colleagues

  • Sustains and elevates working relationships with deans, chairs,
    directors, and faculty members across the university as well as
    colleagues in Knowledge Enterprise and those doing corporate
    engagement work

 

 

What you’ll need:  

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact
    effectively with academic leadership, faculty, prospects, donors,
    and/or volunteers in a wide range of roles

  • Complex problem-solving skills coupled with the ability to
    conduct research, gather data, analyze information, and prepare
    effective, accurate, and timely reports and other documents to
    support development objectives

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of database management and
    report writing

  • Success with grant and/or proposal writing, especially to
    corporate foundations where concise, technical writing may be
    required; ability to identify, qualify, delegate, and submit grants
    sometimes with short turnarounds

  • Ability to inquire about and understand organizational interests
    and needs, and determine how to persuade or market to that
    organization with compelling benefits

  • Ability to exercise good judgment, to demonstrate an
    understanding of ethics related to development activities, and to
    use discretion in interactions with donors, prospects, volunteers,
    and others

  • Ability to foster effective working relationships within a team
    environment

  • Community relations skills and the ability to communicate and
    work effectively within a diverse community

  • Knowledge of fundraising techniques including proposal
    development, prospect identification, program planning, fund
    solicitation, database management, donor tracking, and social
    networking and marketing tools 

  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills and the
    ability to present effectively to diverse groups

  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and
    responsibility regarding information related to Foundation and
    University business and confidential corporate prospect
    information

  • Ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to
    engage with those of other cultures and backgrounds

  • Ability to represent the institution well, both in-person and
    virtually, and possess an advocate’s belief in the vision of ASU as
    the New American University

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable working
    in donor/prospect computer database systems

 

 

Relevant qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of years of successful professional
    development and/or fundraising experience

  • Or any equivalent combination of education and experience from
    which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been
    achieved

  • Demonstrated success in developing and implementing effective
    fundraising strategies, soliciting major gifts, and assessing
    programs to identify those with strong potential for corporate
    support

 

 

Preferred education and experience:

  • Advanced degree

  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of years of successful professional
    development and/or fundraising experience in higher education
    and/or experience working in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
    or Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG)

  • Experience working in Salesforce and Workday
