Director of Globalization

Primary Purpose: The Director of Globalization provides strategic vision and leadership to advancement of the College of Nursing’s globalization initiatives. The incumbent is responsible for fostering globalization initiatives locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. The Director of Globalization maintains relations and key contacts to further the strategic objectives of the CoN and global partners.

Nature of Work: The Director of Globalization collaborates with the Dean and Associate Deans to develop and implement the global goals of the College of Nursing (CoN) in relation to global engagement and global citizenship.

Typical Duties or Accountabilities:

Project and program development/management

  • Research and identify appropriate funding opportunities to support global activities.
  • Initiate contact with potential global partners to advance partnerships and collaborations.
  • Act as a key contact for requests for partnerships and collaborations and recommend appropriate projects or activities.
  • Work closely with the University of Saskatchewan International Office to prepare Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) and manage the process through refinement, acceptance and formalization of partnerships.
  • Develop designated projects, program guidelines and ensure completion of objectives and timelines.
  • Liaise with International educational and health services organizations to arrange for international visitors.
  • Communicate with visitors to ensure understanding of objectives for the visit and follow-up.
  • Consult with partner institutions to manage issues, prepare required documentation, and organize necessary support to facilitate projects or programs.

Strategic Planning

  • Participate in the strategic planning process for the University of Saskatchewan and the CoN global activities.
  • Prepare a strategic plan to integrate global citizenship into the education programs and services of the CoN and to meet the University of Saskatchewan objectives in relation to global engagement.
  • Advise on curriculum changes required to successfully implement the plan for global engagement.

Support for International Travel for Invited Visitors, Faculty and Students  

  • Advise faculty members, in consultation with the Research facilitator, on the availability and applications process of grant applications for international visits, visitors and research projects.
  • Provide guidance and advice to visitors, faculty, and students planning international travel.
  • Communicate necessary information regarding protocol and cultural sensitivities to all required parties.
  • Monitor and advise on travel security.
  • Communicate with contacts abroad to organize meetings and events.
  • Act as host for international visitors and provide support throughout the visit.
  • Write follow-up letters and/or reports and submit all financial documentation in compliance with funding agency guidelines.
  • Participate in international travel as required per project protocol.

International Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Visiting Scholars

  • Consult with the Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies, and the Graduate Chair, regarding the selection of CoN supervisors and provide advice regarding international visiting students.
  • Liaise with the College of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies to process and monitor Visiting Research Students or VRS.
  • Liaise with the College of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies to process and manage applications of international Postdoctoral Fellows.
  • Provide continuing monitoring throughout the visit to facilitate the completion of scholars’ objectives.
  • Compose a final report after the completion of the visit as required.
  • Maintain contact with international scholars to collect data for program evaluation.

Visiting International Professors

  • Consult with the Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies regarding the selection of CoN supervisors and provide advice regarding international visiting students.
  • Liaise with the Dean’s office and the Office of the Vice-Provost Faculty Relations to manage invitations and immigration for visiting international professors.
  • Provide continuing monitoring throughout the visit to facilitate the completion of scholars’ objectives.
  • Compose a final report after the completion of the visit as required.
  • Maintain contact with international scholars to collect data for program evaluation.

Undergraduate Students Global Opportunities

  • Collaborate with the Undergraduate Program to implement plans to support the growth and development of global placements.
  • Organize global placement information sessions for undergraduate students as needed.
  • Maintains documentation, management, travel safety and instructor mentorship for students’ international preceptorship and field experience.
  • Liaise with the University of Saskatchewan International Office and other faculties and agencies to explore undergraduate global programs, scholarships, and academic mobility opportunities.

Administration

  • Prepare reports as required for Faculty Council and Globalization Committee
  • Monitor existing MOUs to ensure contracts are current and identify opportunities for new linkages.
  • Maintain relations with key partners locally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Develop a communications plan for all global activities.
  • Represent the GNO at conferences and meetings.
  • Collaborate with the Dean, Associate Dean Academic and Associate Dean Research and Graduate Studies in the development of the budget for global commitments.

Education: A master’s degree in the social sciences, humanities, or health sciences is essential. Candidates with a relevant combination of education and experience in a university setting will be considered.

Experience:

  • Experience working in cross-cultural environments.
  • Experience in strategic planning and implementation related to the globalization of universities and the development of global citizenship in education.
  • Experience with international funding agencies and funding processes is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the University of Saskatchewan International policies and procedures is an asset.
