Job Summary
The Greater Bay Area Cancer Registry (GBACR) is a program designated by the California Department of Public Health to conduct cancer surveillance for the 9-county Greater Bay Area region. It is a part of the California Cancer Registry (CCR) and the NCI’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program. Cancer registry data are used for ongoing surveillance of cancer patterns and trends across population groups and geographic regions, for addressing community concerns, and for research. The Registry Operations Unit (ROU) is a essential component of the GBACR, and is responsible for all of the data collection and quality control activities, liasing with reporting facilities including hospitals, doctors offices, radiation facilities, pathology laboratories, etc, and ensuring timely and complete reporting of data to funding agencies including SEER and CCR, following federal and state data collection and reporting laws, and data quality standards. The ROU Director oversees this unit and, together with the GBACR Director, is responsible for ensuring the contract workscope deliverables are met, on time, and on budget.

Department Description
The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics (DEB), housed within the UCSF School of Medicine, has a vision to advance discoveries and insights into the distribution, determinants and outcomes of disease that will drive improvements in population health worldwide. The DEB has three missions: 1) education, 2) science, and 3) research. Its educational mission is to train students in epidemiologic and biostatistical methods for studying disease etiology and prevention, evaluating tests and treatments, and using evidence-based approaches in clinical practice and population health. The scientific mission of the DEB is to perform outstanding basic, clinical and population health research along a spectrum from molecules to society and to develop tools for the translation of knowledge that will improve clinical practice and population health and ensure optimal use of resources. The clinical mission of the Department is to support the practice of public health and preventive medicine in local, state, national and international health agencies.
The Greater Bay Area Cancer, housed within the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, is designated by the California Department of Public Health to collect information on every case of cancer diagnosed in the 9-county Bay Area region, and to conduct surveillance on cancer patterns and trends in its local population. It receives funding support from the National Cancer Institute, the California Department of Public Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Registry Operations Unit is responsible for ensuring the completeness and quality of the collected data, in compliance with state and federal cancer registry standards.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Academic knowledge and applied background in the clinical specialty and clinical quality measures.
- Knowledge of department, organization, HR and UC policies and processes. Knowledge of relevant clinical registry industry federal, state and local laws and regulations.
- Demonstrated management and conflict resolution skills to effectively lead and motivate others. Effectively manages multiple important priorities. Proven ability to make decisions based on objective facts and support decisions with evidence.
- Interpersonal skills to work collaboratively, coordinate and integrate with others in clinical specialty program, clinical registry peers, researchers and management.
- Verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate through all mediums and with all groups. Demonstrated abilities to listen actively, persuade, advise, and counsel.
- Advanced user of the internal clinical information and documentation application programs. Ability to train clinical staff, troubleshoot issues, and recommend improvements in convenience and efficiency.
- Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of clinical concepts to improve clinical registry data collection and analysis methodologies. Understanding of current industry trends in clinical specialty.
- Proven analytical abilities and problem solving skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify options for resolution. Demonstrates sound judgement.
- Ability to organize division operations in an efficient and effective manner through improving program administrative processes, procedures, and systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-baccalaureate advanced degree in a health or medical specialty
- Fiscal or financial budget management.
