Director, U.S. AI Governance

Position description

The Future Society (TFS) is seeking an experienced policy leader to spearhead our AI governance work in the United States, with a focus on designing high-impact governance solutions and collaborating with a diverse community of stakeholders. This senior role offers the opportunity to shape our U.S. strategy, build and lead a dedicated team, and establish TFS’s presence in Washington, D.C. As the Director of U.S. AI Governance, you will leverage your policy research expertise, knowledge of AI governance, people management skills, and stakeholder engagement experience to advance TFS’s mission of aligning AI through better governance.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage relationships with a diverse group of policymakers, civil society groups, industry players, and other relevant actors to support the creation and implementation of AI governance policies in the United States.
  • Build and lead a team of highly motivated AI governance professionals, applying excellent people management skills. Take ownership of creating a positive, inclusive, and people-centered team culture where diverse perspectives are celebrated and all staff are empowered to do their best work.
  • Identify tactical opportunities and drive work that serves our mission, including through policy research, events, advisory services, and communications.
  • Organize and participate in workshops, working groups, joint reports, and conferences. Independently and effectively represent TFS at national and international AI policy events.
  • Lead your team in producing high-impact and exceptionally written AI policy memos and other outputs. In collaboration with the Head of Communications, ensure that all written materials are properly aligned with TFS’s voice and mission.
  • Serve as a member of TFS’s Executive Committee, reporting to the Executive Director and contributing to the strategic direction of the organization. In addition to U.S. AI governance, engage as required in the areas of international AI governance, fundraising, advocacy, and strategic communications.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to TFS’s mission of aligning AI through better governance.
  • Established network and credibility within the U.S. AI governance ecosystem. Significant experience and aptitude for coordinating and convening a broad range of stakeholders who may have different visions, towards building bridges and finding constructive compromises.
  • Proven track record of building and managing high-performing teams, including leading impact planning and assessments. Experience establishing a new presence in a strategic location is highly desirable but not required.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills. Demonstrated ability to adapt style and content of written work for diverse audiences, including industry, academia, nonprofits, governments, and non-experts. Strong policy research and analysis skills, evidenced by experience drafting high-quality policy memos and other outputs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of AI governance issues and ecosystem, including a nuanced understanding of general-purpose AI technology. Expert knowledge of the U.S. AI governance landscape, including regulatory initiatives, technology trends, and stakeholder dynamics.
  • Proven ability to work independently, responsibly, reliably, and asynchronously in a primarily remote environment.
  • Willingness and ability to travel both domestically and internationally.
  • Full professional working proficiency in English.

 

Compensation: $156,900

Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision insurance. 403(b) retirement plan with an employer match at 3 percent of salary.

Location: The successful candidate will be expected to spend a minimum of 90 percent of their working days in Washington, D.C. Applicants must have the right to live and work in the United States. Please note that TFS is currently unable to sponsor visas. We can provide reasonable relocation support for a hire with U.S. work authorization.

  • Stage 2: Short Work Test (30 minutes, unpaid)
  • Stage 3: Screening Interview with Recruitment Lead and Senior Associate, AI Governance (30 minutes)
  • Stage 4: Full Work Test (3 hours max, paid)
  • Stage 5: Interview with Nicolas Moës, Executive Director (1 hour)
  • Stage 6: Interview with Members of the Executive Committee (1 hour)
