(a) increase understanding of relevant issues at the international level by involving them directly in the work of the Office and the application of ILO principles, programmes and strategies;
(b) gain practical experience with the ILO directly related to their field of study.
The internship programme is not intended to lead to a career in the ILO. There should be no expectation of further employment at the end of the internship.

Introduction
In line with one of the main objectives of the human resources strategy, i.e., conducive working environment, the Staff Welfare Officer is a primary point of contact for staff members and their families to reach out for support, guidance and professional help when facing crisis or personal concerns.
The Office of the Mediator plays a central role in the Office in the process of informal conflict resolution. The office mediates and facilitates conflict resolution related to workplace issues and disputes and supports early detection of workplace issues, preventive action and other related activities.
Learning areas
As an intern in the Mediator´s and Staff Welfare Offices, you will be exposed to a whole range of areas related to conflict resolution and psychosocial and counselling support You will provide support in the building of a common network of Facilitators and Peer Support Volunteers from designing the ToR to implementing the new format including the selection and training.
Additionally, the intern will assist the Staff Welfare Officer with:
- the implementation of the activities, under the ILO Action Plan on Mental Health and Well-being
- bringing an equality and non-discrimination perspective to the SWO, by mainstreaming relevant issues into the Office’s work
- the update of the ILO Newcomers guide
- the update of the SWO intranet page with relevant links, tools
- assist with other tasks, as needed.
For the Office of the Mediator, the intern is expected to help with:
- the implementation of the website;
- the development of the annual report of the Office;
- research upon demand.
Required profile
During the internship with SWO and the mediator’s office, the incumbent will:
- receive weekly support meetings
- maintain strict confidentiality throughout the internship
- learn about well-being and psycho-social/mental health policies, procedures, amicable conflict resolution and interventions at ILO and within the UN system.
You would be gaining experience in working with specialists who are involved in assisting staff members to settle disagreements using recognized mediation and facilitations techniques, support preventive actions to avoid conflictual situations, provide psychosocial support and counselling to staff members en facing crisis or personal concerns and contribute to the development of a healthy working environment.
Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.
Education
- Psychology, social work, sociopsychology, sociology, law, or communication.
- The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 years ago
Experience
- Any relevant work experience would be beneficial
- The ability to use standards MS office products would be an advantage
- Knowledge on data analysis would be an advantage
Languages
- Excellent knowledge of English.
- Working knowledge of Spanish or French is an advantage
Competencies
- Applicants should be able to adapt to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, have good communication skills, and be able to work in teams.
- Good drafting in English
- Analytical and research skills.
- Ability to take initiatives.
- Experience with virtual training delivery will be an asset

Selection process:
Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster.
If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.
Stipend/Financial compensations:
As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2450 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2450 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense. In addition to the amounts referred above, each intern shall receive the amount of CHF45 per month, or the equivalent amount in the currency in which the monthly stipend is paid, which is a contribution from the Office towards the cost of medical insurance to cover the period of the internship.
Qualified candidates from non- and under- represented countries may be eligible for a special fund that provides financial assistance for round-trip airfare (economy class) in addition to the stipend.
Insurance:
Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
