The Opportunity
Maribyrnong Council has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Disability Planner to join the Access & Participation Unit. You will be passionate about access and inclusion.
Reporting to the Access & Participation Lead you will support the implementation of Council’s Disability Action Plan (DAP). Your ability to work with a diverse range of community members and stakeholders and develop and strengthen partnerships and networks, support advocacy and program initiatives that improve the wellbeing of people with a disability, will be highly regarded.
Key Responsibilities
- Development and delivery of Council’s Disability Action Plan
- Provide specialist disability access and inclusion advice to Council staff in a responsive and timely manner
- Build the capacity of Council to integrate access issues into contemporary planning processes
- Ongoing monitoring and reporting of Council’s Disability Action Plan through evaluation of work undertaken across Council including the assessment of its impact
- Apply social justice principles and a community development framework to access and inclusion issues when working with Council staff
- Work across Council to build collaborative relationships, understanding and ownership of access and inclusion objectives with key stakeholders
- Build the capacity of Council staff to ensure they are well equipped to respond to the needs of people with disability
- Produce regular reporting documents for internal and external stakeholders in relation to the Disability Action Plan.
About You
To be considered for this role, you will have the following:
- A relevant tertiary qualification in a field related to disability, social, community or policy and planning including; community development, policy development or a similar discipline with some relevant experience
- Demonstrated knowledge of disability, the impacts of disability on an individual and how these issues interface with community
- An understanding of community development theory and practice, principles of community inclusion and participation and community planning strategies
- Practical skills, knowledge and understanding of the Social Model of disability and how that can be used in a local government environment
- Demonstrated understanding of relevant State and Federal policy frameworks including current policy directions relating to the National Disability Insurance Scheme and the state Disability Action Plan
- Well-developed written and verbal communication and presentation skills to communicate with a diverse range of staff and key stakeholders and the ability to prepare complex and concise reports
- Demonstrable experience working with diverse communities including people with disability
- Demonstrated experience in providing secretariat and administrative support for projects and community advisory groups
- No relevant criminal record found in a police check.
