Are you an experienced, expert level Biologist eager to participate in WDFW’s wildlife surveys, develop and recommend wildlife related recreation, and partner efforts for conservation?  Are you a curious scientist as interested in analyzing and presenting data as you are in collecting wildlife data in the field?   Do you love to talk to the public about our wildlife resources and increase their appreciation of the great outdoors?

As our District Wildlife Biologist, you will monitor wildlife population within the Blue Mountains District, a diverse landscape which includes the Blue Mountains, shrub-steppe, forested, urban, and agricultural habitats. The Blue Mountains are home to rocky mountain elk, bighorn sheep, mule deer, white-tailed deer, black bear, cougar, ferruginous hawks, osprey, forest grouse, golden eagles, and a myriad of other bird, mammal, reptile, and amphibian species.   This area is a world class destination for wildlife-related recreation.

With your strong partnering skills, you will collaborate to identify and implement strategies to conserve species of greatest conservation need within the District and range-wide. 

Duties

Our District Wildlife Biologist,

• Develops or co-develops wildlife surveys for assigned district.
• Conducts assigned wildlife surveys as part of a statewide effort.
• Compiles and analyzes data and writes reports.
• Recommends hunting regulations and regulation changes (e.g. WAC).
• Develops and recommends watchable wildlife opportunities.
• Carries out population augmentation, capture and translocation.
• May apply chemical immobilization drugs for capturing wildlife.
• Carries out game species harvest monitoring.
• Orally or in writing, explains data and presents options to public groups to increase public knowledge.
• Leads work team on carrying out assignments and ensures deadlines are met.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Work Setting, including hazards:
  • Office work includes extended work with personal computers.
  • Field work includes travel to and from field sites and work in outdoor conditions often in extreme weather conditions.  Field work can vary from 10% to 80% depending upon season and requires working outdoors during inclement weather, walking over rough terrain (typically less than a mile but occasionally over long distances of several miles) while carrying a light load.
  • Field surveys are conducted by airplane, helicopter, boat, vehicle and on foot.
  • Will handle immobilization drugs for capturing wildlife.
  • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
• Schedule:
  • 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Mon – Fri.
  • Frequent irregular hours and weekend work.
• Travel Requirements:
  • Frequent travel to and from field sites and meetings.
• Tools and Equipment:
  • Small tools associated with limited maintenance activities.
• Customer Interactions:
  • Numerous interactions with the public, elected officials, and other government employees.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

• A bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science.

AND

• Five (5) years of professional experience in fish management or fish research, wildlife management or wildlife research, or habitat management or habitat research. Twelve semesters or eighteen- quarter hours of specific course work are required for certain positions.

License:

• Valid Driver’s License.

Training:

• First Aid Training.
• Chemical Immobilization Training.
• WDFW Firearms Training.
• Requires completion of both “basic flight” and “water ditching and survival” training before working aboard small aircraft.
• Successful completion of agency training and/or certification for assigned watercraft dependent on supervisory. direction, position need and training availability.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following: 

• A master’s degree in wildlife management, natural resources science, or environmental science.

Job knowledge:

• Wildlife population relationships and ecology.
• Wildlife habitat relationships.
• Wildlife survey methods.
• Applicable state, federal, and local environmental regulations and policies.
• Principles of wildlife harvest management.
• Personal computer hardware and software (MSOffice).
• Must have good oral and written communication skills – conveys clear, timely, persuasive messages that positively influence the thoughts and actions of others.
• Species identification.
• Wildlife management tools and field techniques.
• Contract development and administration.
