Dongguan Institute of Materials Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences

The Dongguan Institute of Materials Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (abbreviated as DIMST, CAS) was jointly established on January 20, 2025 by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the People’s Government of Guangdong Province, and the People’s Government of Dongguan. It is located in the Pilot Start-up Area of the Comprehensive National Science Center in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (Songshan Lake Science City), with a first-phase campus area of 263 mu. On September 28, 2025, DIMST received approval from the Central Institutional Organization Commission to be established as a central public institution. On December 6, 2025, DIMST was officially inaugurated, marking a new stage of high-quality development.

Led by Academician Wang Weihua, DIMST is structured around three major domains: frontier science in new materials, major industrial demands, and research paradigm transformation. With the mission of addressing fundamental scientific frontier issues and key applied challenges in the field of new materials, and of fostering the development of new quality productive forces, DIMST aims to promote the establishment of new research paradigms in materials science and technology and to drive future innovation in new materials technologies. Leveraging the advantages of major national scientific and technological infrastructures, DIMST focuses on fundamental and generic technologies and applied research related to strategically important core materials urgently needed by the nation, facilitating full integration of innovation and industrial chains. At the same time, it strives to attract top-tier talent and high-level research platforms in the materials field, deliver breakthroughs in key core technologies, and become a leading research institution in China’s new materials sector—serving as a source of original innovation, a hub for industrial technology diffusion, and a national center for cultivating innovative talent.

Recruitment Requirements

1. Keep abreast of international cutting-edge advances in the relevant field, gain an in-depth understanding of China’s major strategic demands in materials science and related key areas, and propose forward-looking major research directions.
2. Hold a national-level talent title or a talent title issued by the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
3. Have presided over and completed national key science and technology projects as the Principal Investigator (PI).
4. Be a leading expert in the relevant discipline, whose work has exerted significant impacts on academic progress or high-tech innovation and integration of the field, and earned wide recognition from peers at home and abroad.
5. Possess outstanding team leadership, organizational and coordination capabilities, be capable of attracting and uniting outstanding young researchers, and have a proven track record of leading teams to deliver landmark scientific research achievements.

Remuneration and Support

1. Annual salary system: Valid for 5 years, with internationally competitive salary and welfare benefits provided.
2. Research startup funding: 10 million RMB supported by DIMST; priority will be given to recommending candidates for various talent programs, with a cumulative maximum support of up to 23 million RMB upon being selected.

Wei’e Outstanding Young Scientists

Recruitment Requirements

1. Candidates shall normally hold formal teaching or research positions at prestigious universities, research institutions and corporate R&D centers in China and overseas, with a minimum of three consecutive years of working experience. Those who hold an overseas doctoral degree with exceptionally outstanding achievements may be eligible for a moderate relaxation of the working experience requirement.
2. Candidates shall have received a national-level talent title or undertaken national science and technology projects as the principal investigator.
3. Possess extensive research experience, innovative academic ideas and technical approaches, be capable of proposing novel research frameworks, actively undertake research assignments and drive high-quality research outputs.
4. Have generated research or technological achievements recognized by peer experts, and demonstrate great potential to become an academic leader or distinguished talent in the corresponding field.
5. Age is generally no more than 40 years old; the age limit may be relaxed for exceptionally outstanding candidates.

Remuneration and Support

1. Annual salary system: Valid for 5 years, with internationally competitive salary and welfare benefits provided.
2. Research startup funding: 5 million RMB supported by DIMST; priority will be given to recommending candidates for various talent programs, with a cumulative maximum support of up to 12 million RMB upon being selected.

Wei’e Young Scientists

Recruitment Requirements

1. Possess a solid theoretical foundation in materials science and strong research innovation capabilities, and be able to conduct independent research in line with cutting-edge international research directions in the field.
2. Generally hold a doctoral degree from a well-known university or research institution at home or abroad, and have study or work experience in a renowned university (research institution) at home or abroad. The work experience requirement may be appropriately relaxed for candidates with outstanding research achievements.
3. Have participated in major research projects, published high-level research papers, or independently engaged in specialized technology research and development in the field with excellent research outcomes.
4. Have a strong sense of teamwork, be able to actively participate in team research projects, undertake assigned research tasks, and have the potential to grow into a research backbone.
5. Age is generally no more than 35 years old; the age limit may be relaxed for exceptionally outstanding candidates.

Research Support

Research startup funding: 1 million RMB supported by DIMST; priority will be given to recommending candidates for various talent programs, with a cumulative maximum support of up to 8 million RMB upon being selected.

Compensation and Benefits

1. Offering staffing quota under central government-affiliated public institutions (for Wei’e Leading Scientists and Wei’e Outstanding Young Scientists)；

Team establishment funding will be determined on a case-by-case basis. Successful applicants will receive allocated quotas for postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, as well as ample office and laboratory space.

Recipients of the Wei’e Leading Scientist and Wei’e Outstanding Young Scientist are entitled to municipal housing purchase subsidies or one discounted housing unit with full property rights in accordance with relevant regulations.

More than 1 billion RMB has been invested to establish a comprehensive, world-class research infrastructure system covering materials design, preparation, processing, characterization, measurement, and simulation.

5. Social Security and Additional Benefits:

Five Social Insurances(Endowment Insurance, Medical Insurance, Unemployment Insurance, Employment Injury Insurance, and Maternity Insurance), Housing Provident Fund and Enterprise Annuity are provided at the highest standard. Spouses without current employment are eligible for a special monthly allowance for up to three years:

• Wei’e Leading Scientists: Maximum total allowance of RMB 288,000, paid at RMB 8,000 per month. Payments start from the month following your onboarding and will cease at the end of the month if your spouse secures new employment during the period.
• Wei’e Outstanding Young Scientists: Maximum total allowance of RMB 180,000, paid at RMB 5,000 per month. Payments start from the month following your onboarding and will cease at the end of the month if your spouse secures new employment during the period.

Special Notice

DIMST warmly invites overseas talents to take trial positions with our institute. Qualified overseas talents and their accompanying family members can receive living allowances for a stay in Guangdong of up to six months. The allowances cover transitional living expenses, temporary housing, round-trip transportation, medical and accident insurance, labor fees, relevant taxes and other related costs.

I. Eligibility Criteria

This program targets overseas talents who have no employment in China yet, or have unclear intentions to return to China for work; those with tentative plans to work in China but no confirmed domestic employer; and those who have a prospective employer but have not signed a formal employment contract.

1. Graduates of science, engineering, agriculture and medicine disciplines from universities ranked among the world’s top 200 overall or top 200 by subject. Priority will be given to PhD holders and postdoctoral researchers (normally required to have a minimum of two consecutive years of overseas study or work experience).
2. High-end industrial talents including chief scientists, chief engineers and senior R&D staff at world-renowned technology enterprises; senior researchers at the Associate Professor / Associate Research Fellow level or above; engineering and technical talents in urgently needed shortage fields; high-risk talents who have been targeted by Western countries and wish to return to China for a transitional stay (normally required to have a minimum of three consecutive years of overseas work experience).
3. Applicants shall generally be under 65 years of age. Young talents under 40 are strongly encouraged. Preference will be given to talents engaged in key core technology sectors including integrated circuits, artificial intelligence, biomedicine, quantum information and new energy.
4. Overseas talents who have been selected for national or local talent programs are generally ineligible for this special program. Each overseas talent may only submit one application.

II. Allowance Standards

1. Senior researchers at the Associate Professor / Associate Research Fellow level or above and high-end industrial talents: A monthly allowance of RMB 25,000 for the talent; a monthly allowance of RMB 20,000 per spouse and child. The total monthly allowance for one family shall not exceed RMB 60,000.
2. Young talents with a doctoral degree or postdoctoral experience: A monthly allowance of RMB 20,000 for the talent; a monthly allowance of RMB 15,000 per spouse and child. The total monthly allowance for one family shall not exceed RMB 50,000.
3. Engineering and technical talents in shortage fields and high-risk talents: Allowances will be provided based on actual circumstances and shall not exceed the standard for Associate Professor / Associate Research Fellow-level talents.

III. Allowance Duration Rules

• No allowance will be granted if the stay at the institute lasts fewer than 8 days.
• A half-month allowance will be provided for stays of 8 to 20 days.
• A one-month allowance will be provided for stays of 21 to 35 days.
• An additional half-month allowance will be offered for every extra 1 to 15 days thereafter. The maximum allowance period shall not exceed six months in total.

Talents who sign an employment contract with the institute during their exchange or trial position period, or leave the institute after abandoning their work intention, will no longer be eligible for allowances.

Allowance qualifications will be revoked for overseas talents under the following circumstances: failing to arrive in Guangdong for exchange within three months after allowance approval; leaving Guangdong for more than 15 days without official notification during the allowance period; being unable to continue the exchange or trial position due to personal reasons or force majeure.
