Mission and objectives

The World Health Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations Public Health Organization established in 1948. The objective of the World Health Organization shall be the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health.
World Health Organization achieves its goals by performing its essential functions:
1. Take a leadership role in key health issues and create partnerships when joint action is needed;
2. Set research priorities and encourage the acquisition, application and dissemination of useful knowledge;
3. Setting standards and criteria and encouraging and monitoring them;
4. Develop ethical and evidence-based policies
5. Provide technical support, be an agent of change and build institutional capacity in a sustainable way;
6. Monitor health status and assess health trends.

Context

In the context of WHO’s 13th General Programme of Work (GPW) and its triple-billion strategy, the UNV will support communications highlighting the impact of donors at county level. Key deliverables include: accurate and timely production and dissemination of high quality public information products which highlight WHO work and donors’ impact on the ground; promoting achievements and results of key public health initiatives and optimizing networking opportunities.
The new focus of our work will be at the country level where we aim to reach the triple billion goal of 1 billion more people covered, 1 billion more protected and 1 billion more healthier populations. In this regard, the UN Volunteers can work at the Regional Office based in the Republic of Congo, Brazzaville or in any of our 47 country offices.
The areas of work that can be covered include: communicable and non-communicable diseases, healthier populations, health systems and information, emergency preparedness and response, data collection and management, family and reproductive health, programme support and administration.

Task description

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Regional Communication Manager, the UN Volunteer will:
1. Liaise with country offices and external relations unit to identify programs funded by donors and develop quality communication products highlighting donor impact and achievements.
2. Produce public information materials such as human-interest stories, press releases, notes for the media, social media posts and other material on donor related activities, events, products and issues for use by the print, electronic and online media.
3. Collaborate with all relevant actors, including the external partnership team, health clusters, regional and field offices, other WHO departments, UN agencies, and other partners to identify and create communication opportunities on donor visibility.
4. Draft social media content acknowledging funding and celebrating donors’ impact, and track performance of digital communications, as well as guide to best digital strategy.
5. Organize photographic shoots, interviews and filming opportunities to support high visibility of donor impact through various public platforms.
6. Organize donor visits in countries to collect quality audio-visual content.
7. Monitor donor related coverage and programmes and provide regular reports and plans for optimal visibility.
8. Work with external relations focal points at country level and in the regional office to prepare communication and advocacy products and statements to be used by the Resource Mobilization team in convincing and encouraging donors to rapidly fund the overall health sector response.
9. Perform any other communications- related duties, as required by the functional supervisor.
Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:
• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
• Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
• Provide annual and end of assignment self- reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
• Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
• Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
• Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
