BACKGROUND:

Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.Domestically, our 28 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

SCOPE OF INTERN WORK:

The Early Childhood Education Intern will work under the direction of the Early Childhood Specialist. They will be responsible for supporting educational services for children ages 0 to 4 who are within two years of IRC case management. The Early Childhood Education Intern will complete school enrollment applications for various preschool programs such as Head Start, UPSTART online program, and public school district programs. The Early Education Intern will also provide logistical support to families such as transportation orientations, first day of school assistance, and follow up support.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

•Screen families with children for potential participation in preschool programs

•Enroll eligible children in early education services/programs

•Provide logistical support to families such as transportation orientations and first day of school support

•Help caregivers attend important school events/meetings; act as a liaison for the family at school orientations, parent-teacher meetings, etc.

a.This may include transporting clients in intern’s personal vehicle or using an IRC vehicle

•Provide follow up support to family as needed

•Ensure proper case noting of services provided

Minimum Qualifications:

REQUIREMENTS:

•Previous experience with youth & education preferred; experience with refugee populations is a plus

•Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English; fluency in Swahili, Kinyarwanda, Arabic, Burmese, French, Dari/Farsi, or other language helpful

•Valid driver’s license and current auto insurance

•Successful completion of IRC background check

•Must be currently enrolled in a graduate/undergraduate program, or have graduated less than 6 months ago

•Work 10-15 hours per week for 3 months

oFirst Cohort: August 19th – December 6th

oSecond Cohort: September 9th – December 20th

•This is an UNPAID intern position, mileage reimbursement and other reimbursements will be provided, but there is not hourly wage.
