Ecologist

Middle Level Commissioners

tendersglobal.net

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join an ambitious and productive team at the Middle Level
Commissioners (MLC) as an ecologist. You will have the opportunity to benefit from an exciting
and diverse workload, delivering high quality advice and support for internal and external
clients to secure ecological and environment enhancement through the delivery of our flood risk
and water level management operations.

We have been proudly managing water levels in the Fens since 1862 and have gained a reputation
as a leader in the sector for successfully balancing and managing flood risk, water levels,
navigation and nature conservation across the Middle Level, building from the legacy left by
the engineers and adventurers involved in the Great Drainage from the 1600s.

The MLC system consists of an arterial network of 200km of channels and banks, spanning two
counties. It is where some of our most threatened habitats and species find refuge and thrive,
in an otherwise intensively cultivated and developed landscape. The MLC also provide
environmental and consultancy services to 36 other Internal Drainage Boards (IDBs) within the
same local area, so we are uniquely placed to positively influence opportunities for nature
across a significant area of the fenland landscape.

This is an exciting time to be working in the Fens with many national environmental policies
and strategies focussing on the area to deliver multifunctional solutions to address the
climate and biodiversity crises. Opportunities to get involved and make a real difference are
abundant and IDBs are right at the centre of the story.
