Ecology Officer x2

Highland Council

tendersglobal.net

Are you an ecologist that wants to work in one of the most stunning parts of the UK, home to
many of the country’s most important and iconic habitats and species? Are you looking for
competitive pay (£37,146 – £40,258 per year) and excellent working conditions, including flexible
working across a 35-hour week, minimum 28 days annual leave (plus 7 days paid public holiday),
a generous pension scheme, full support for CPD and training and employee discounts? If so,
these opportunities may be for you!

Highland Council are looking for two ecologists (one permanent and one fixed-term for 18 months) to join our
small, friendly Ecology Team. Both positions will have a varied and dynamic remit. The focus
will be providing ecology advice to the planning authority and developers on a range of
development proposals to secure positive improvements for biodiversity. You will also assist or
lead on a wide range of project work (much of which can be tailored to your interests and
skillset) and have the opportunity to work closely with our ecology survey team undertaking survey work across the Highlands.

Current projects underway include the identification, survey and mapping of Nature Networks and
Local Nature Conservation Sites; helping identify and deliver biodiversity improvements across the Council estate;
developing biodiversity policy and strategy; assessing internal and external projects applying to the Nature Restoration Fund; delivering the aims and actions of the Council’s
emerging Ecology Strategy and the Scottish Biodiversity Strategy and working with partners to help develop the new Local Biodiversity Action Plan.

You will have a degree in ecology or a related discipline and an excellent knowledge of
biodiversity and the issues that affect its management. Practical experience (through a
consultancy and/or a Planning Authority) of working on planning and related ecological casework
and a proven ability to take a proportionate and balanced view on ecology matters and competing
interests in a planning context would be an advantage. You will also have a basic knowledge and
understanding of relevant legislation, strategies and policy/guidance.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working with a wide range of people,
including fellow officers and Council managers, developers, agents, consultants, elected
Members and the public. You will be self-motivated and comfortable using your own initiative
and able to manage a varied workload.
