Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Policy Analysis and Development Branch of the Financing for Sustainable Development Office (FSDO) in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The Economic Affairs Officer will report to the Senior Economic Affairs Officer in the Policy Analysis and Development Branch. The Financing for Sustainable Development Office provides effective secretariat support for sustained follow-up within the United Nations system to the agreements and commitments reached at the International Conference on Financing for Development, as well as financing for development related aspects of the outcomes of major United Nations conferences and summits in the economic and social fields. 

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Senior Economic Affairs Officer in the Policy Analysis and Development Branch, this Economic Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Develops socio-economic databases and qualitative information necessary for specified recurrent or ad hoc assignments;
  • Assists in monitoring economic developments and identifies recurrent and emerging issues related to other thematic areas of the Monterrey Consensus, Doha Declaration and Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development and related outcomes;
  • Drafts specified inputs to the Financing for Sustainable Development Report of the Inter-Agency Task Force on Financing for Development, annual reports of the Secretary-General, other analytical studies, technical papers and publications;
  • Identifies and analyses policy proposals and engages in economic analysis; assists in research and policy analysis on issues relating to Financing for Development.
  • Assists in designing and conducting studies of selected issues related to FfD;
  • Assists in the organization and servicing of expert group meetings, seminars, etc. on the topics related to FfD, including drafting reports, overseeing and engaging in notetaking, and overseeing and offering administrative support as needed;
  • Prepares speeches and other inputs for presentations on topics related to the FfD process and related areas by senior staff;
  • Provides substantive support to the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council, and services inter-agency meetings within the FfD follow-up process, as requested;
  • Performs other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the work unit’s services;
  • Undertakes on-the-job and other training activities, both internally and externally.

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in economics or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in development programmes or related area is required;
  • Experience in fiscal policy, public budgets, public financial management or climate finance is desirable;
  • Experience in publishing policy-oriented research papers, articles or other publications in economics or related field at the international level is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
