UChicago STEM Education is a center devoted to research and development that resides within the Physical Sciences Division (PSD) of the University of Chicago. UChicago STEM Education continues the University of Chicago’s long-standing commitment to improving precollege education and aims to support high quality instruction and learning for all students. Through the sharing of knowledge and the creation of useful products and programs, UChicago STEM Education seeks to make a positive difference for instruction throughout the nation.
UChicago Financial Education Initiative, part of UChicago STEM Education, seeks to empower all individuals to navigate the financial system with confidence, make informed and reasoned financial decisions throughout their lives, and realize long-term financial well-being. The Initiative was launched in July 2016 to develop the tools, resources, and capacity to spread robust financial education across the country. This includes the development and publication of tools for kids and families. The Initiative is regularly invited to conferences and educational events to share their unique approach to financial education.

Job Summary
 

Join a fast-paced and innovative team that is developing a world-class elementary financial education curriculum for students in Hong Kong. Develop tools to help elementary teachers enact this curriculum with their students.
The Editing Specialist edits complex manuscript for grammar, punctuation, spelling, style, form, sentence structure, clarity, consistency, and accuracy. Creates online and/or print versions of publications. Will perform quality control checking at all stages of production for all written material. The Editing Specialist will maintain editing schedules and manage the proofreading, review and correction of page proofs and additional proof stages.

Responsibilities

  • Edit complex manuscript for grammar, punctuation, spelling, style, form, sentence structure, clarity, consistency, and accuracy

  • Responsible for creating online and/or print versions of publications

  • Manages the quality control at all stages of production for all written material

  • Maintain editing schedules and manages the proofreading, review and correction of page proofs and additional proof stages

  • Work directly with writers, editors, and others involved in project

  • Ensure the quality of editorial work of others and advises them on the prioritization of assignments.

  • Leads the staff in setting procedures and editing styles and in resolving any other issues

  • Coordinate with a graphic designer on creation of an InDesign lesson template

  • Place all manuscript in lesson template

  • Work with translator to create version in different language

  • Works with minimal guidance to edit complex manuscripts and other forms of copy for grammar, punctuation, spelling, style, form, sentence structure, clarity, consistency and accuracy. Creates online and/or print versions of publications. Performs quality control checking at all stages of production for all written material in an editorial group

  • Uses best practices and knowledge to write, update, and revise style notes for each assigned journal

  • Perform other related work as needed

Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.


Certifications:

Experience:       

  • Strong editorial skills

  • Experience editing manuscript

  • Strong organizational, verbal and communication skills

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Proficiency with standard programs (InDesign, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Docs)

  • Demonstrated ability to execute advanced tasks independently

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team, including providing and responding well to constructive feedback

  • Capable of working on multiple aspects of the project simultaneously

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
