Org. Setting and Reporting
The position is located in the Journal Unit, Meetings Management Section (MMS), Central Planning and Coordination Division (CPCD), Department for General Assembly and Conference Management in New York. The Journal Unit is responsible for the daily preparation and publication of the UN Journal. The UN Journal is a complete picture and historical record of the life of United Nations Headquarters on any given day – what meetings are being held, when and where, what topics are being discussed and what documents are the basis of those discussions. The incumbent reports to the Chief of Journal Unit.
Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Supervisor and the guidance of the Journal Project Manager, the incumbent is responsible for the daily preparation including proofreading and correction of the Journal of the United Nations in English and in French in the Journal website. • Assists in producing the digital journal via the Journal Content Management System (JCMS) platform. • Assists in screening all text submitted for Journal publication in order to ensure compliance with submission standards and regulations and to ensure a timely publication of the Journal in all six official languages of the United Nations. • Monitors verifies accuracy for incoming and outgoing texts in the Journal e-mail as well as JCMS inbox for initial translation to French and informs supervisor of technical problems or concerns for the translation. • Assists and inform of incoming elements and tracking the workflow; format the elements and keeps all concerned informed of changes in processing schedules and transmits corrections made by author departments/divisions to texts in process via JCMS. • Screens, edits, revises in English and French, the draft copy of the publication following editing rules, terminology bulletins and guidelines using eLUNa, ODS, dtSearch and UNTERM. • Acts as focal point for gDoc, JCMS and social media (Twitter and Facebook). • Provides reference assistance to co-workers and supervisor as needed. • Maintains the Unit’s reference collection of UN documents, publications and other reference materials, including special databases in the shared file system for easy reference. • Ensures that all staff in the Unit, including temporary staff, has basic computer equipment, software, telephone and e-mail services; takes charge of all arrangements connected with this task. • Provides basic computer technical support to all staff in the Unit; performs basic troubleshooting functions in a timely manner; maintains contact with Business Analysis Section (BAS) and reports problems to the BAS Journal Support Team when required. • Performs general office support functions for the Unit, and take minutes of the meetings held by the Unit. • Carries out other tasks requested by the Supervisor or the Project Manager; covers other General Service staff functions when a staff member is absent.

Work Experience
A minimum of five years of experience in composing, formatting, proofreading informal translation is required. Experience with online search is desirable. Experience in social media tools is desirable. Experience in providing reference or technical support to language staff is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in French and English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

The Journal Unit works from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. or as allocated by the supervisor. • This position is temporarily available until 29 July 2024. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment. • While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post. • Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station. • This temporary job opening may be limited to “internal candidates,” who have been recruited through a competitive examination administered according to staff rule 4.16 or staff selection process including the review of a central review body established according to staff rule 4.15.
