Job Description
About the Role
The New York Times Licensing Group, the division that manages the distribution of journalism from The New York Times and other content providers around the world, seeks an editorial assistant.
The editorial team is responsible for editing, curating and packaging articles that make up different licensed products and services. They edit, repackage or abridge multiple columns, news stories and in-depth features to meet the needs of international clients. The team contributes to the creation, editing and distribution of bespoke publications and special series featuring essays by international contributors.
The editorial assistant, which is an entry-level position, manages a portfolio of syndication services and ensuring their on-time delivery to clients. You will report directly to the Assistant Managing Editor, Syndication.
Responsibilities:
Edit content from The New York Times Licensing Group’s syndication services according to each service’s parameters and ensure its delivery to clients on deadline.
Curate content that is best suited to the Licensing Group’s diverse international clientele.
Editing articles according to AP style or New York Times style.
Line-editing articles for clarity and abridging them by thousands of words so that smaller publications can publish them.
Perform a variety of administrative tasks supporting the work of the senior editors and the assistant managing editor.
Fact-check, copyedit and format articles.
Scrape text into our CMS for publication.
Reply to rights queries from the global sales team and preparing marketing emails.
Assist in the Licensing Group’s special commissioned packages.
Ensure all articles have the correct headers with informative slugs, the proper keywords and copyright.
File corrections and kills for syndicated content.
Coordinate with the photo editor to ensure that the correct art is posted with each article.
Maintain and foster the Licensing Group’s working relationships with its content providers.
Prepare and send the daily newsletter email for the global sales team.
Assist with invoices and expense tracking.
Check daily that the Licensing Group’s systems have delivered promptly on our syndicated content to clients.
Track the number of articles delivered to clients from each service throughout the week.
Research resources and troubleshoot creatively.
Basic Qualifications:
Up to 3 years of editing experience or relevant experience in a media organization
Fluency and ability to edit text in either Spanish or Mandarin
Excellent writing and editing skills
Collaboration and excellent with prioritization
Tireless at sweating the details
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree
Avid consumer of all media and a passion for The New York Times brand
The annual base pay range for this role is between $45,000 and $53,000.
