EDUCATION AND ENGAGEMENT COORDINATOR

The Cumberland River Compact is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to enhancing the health and enjoyment of the Cumberland River and its tributaries through education, collaboration, and action. Serving three million people and thousands of species, the Cumberland River Compact (Compact) works to address root causes of water pollution, both urban and rural. Integral to the success of our mission are our knowledgeable and dedicated staff that embody the values of our organization and work closely as a team to advance conservation and education goals.

The Education and Engagement Coordinator will report to the Division Manager for Education and Engagement and is responsible for delivering high-quality, water-centric environmental education programs to schools in Middle Tennessee. The Compact’s experiential education programs foster a connection to nature that leads to action through hands-on activities on topics like stream ecology, biodiversity, water pollution, and stewardship.

Schedule: 

This is a full-time hourly position at 37.5 hours per week following a standard schedule of Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM. However, specific times may vary each day depending on school program needs. The Education and Engagement Coordinator is expected to spend approximately 60% of their time directly engaging with students and teachers at schools and community programs. Some evening and weekend work hours may be required. The Cumberland River Compact’s hybrid work arrangement requires staff to be in the office three (3) days per week. The Coordinator is encouraged to be in the office when not delivering programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver high-quality environmental education programs for K-12 classrooms, afterschool programs, and homeschool groups. 
  • Represent the Compact to schools, teachers, and students professionally and knowledgeably. 
  • Perform aquatic field sampling for education programs including collecting macroinvertebrates from local streams. 
  • Maintain organization and inventory of program supplies.
  • Coordinate family engagement programs like Waterfest – a youth education special event. 
  • Develop and update K-12 school programs following the Cumberland River Compact model. 
  • Support the Nashville Youth Climate Program by assisting with events, planning, and logistics. 
  • Submit accurate and timely program information through existing tracking systems. 
  • Commit to continued improvement in learning water-centric environmental content and implementing best practices in education. 
  • Support additional Education and Engagement team and Compact-wide activities as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Strong communication and education skills with a dedication to accurately communicating environmental content. 
  • Enthusiasm for working with children and teachers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Relevant experience in presentations and/or education program facilitation for large groups of students (20 to 30 students).
  • Ability to engage with and manage diverse learners in classroom and community settings. 
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and flexibility in program delivery and facilitation. 
  • Environmental Science knowledge and a demonstrated willingness to learn new topics. 
  • Collaborative mindset and ability to work with a team. 
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs. or more and stand for a prolonged time.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable personal vehicle.
  • Ability to travel within Middle Tennessee. 
  • At least 18 years old with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Meet the requirements of the Metro Nashville Public Schools background screening process. 

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, environmental science, biology, natural resources, or related field.
  • Love of freshwater habitats.
  • Proficiency in an additional language (Spanish or Arabic preferred).

Compensation:

  • $22/hour.
  • 401(k) with employer match. 
  • Eleven (11) paid holidays in addition to twelve (12) days of earned time off per year as a combination of sick and paid time off.

  • Eligible for annual performance-based bonus of up to 8%.
