Context
IOM supports the United States’ Refugee Admissions Program at a resettlement processing site (Camp Al Sayliyah- CAS) established in Qatar. Through its Assistance Programme (AP), IOM implements a wide range of activities to ensure the dignity and well-being of individuals transiting through Doha, in coordination with national and US authorities. In addition to Protection, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), Non-Food Items (NFI), Site Management Services (SMS), and Community Engagement, IOM under AP oversees the provision of non-formal Education activities at the site to children and adults five days a week at CAS.
Under general guidance of the Programme Manager (Education), the overall supervision of the Programme Officers (Education) and Senior Education Assistant, and direct supervision of the Education Assistants, this role encompasses delivering comprehensive English language instruction, Basic Computer Literacy, integrating United States’ civic education principles into curriculum, and addressing specialized topics crucial for our diverse student community who are waiting for resettlement in the U.S. Informal instruction will be delivered to students ranging in age from three to adults aged over sixty. The ideal candidate should possess agility to adapt teaching methods and content to meet evolving student dynamics.
Responsibilities
- English Language Instruction:
- Deliver comprehensive English language lessons tailored to guests’ varying proficiency levels, focusing on practical and conversational skills necessary for daily life and communication in the US.
- Conduct regular assessments to track language development and adjust teaching methodologies accordingly.
- Basic Mathematics:
- Provide foundational math instruction, catering to practical applications relevant to daily life and potential employment in the US.
- US Geography:
- Introduce the geography of the United States, including key states, cities, landmarks, and cultural aspects, facilitating an understanding of the new environment.
- Basic Computer Literacy:
- Introduce fundamental computer skills including operating systems, internet usage, email communication, and basic software applications, equipping guests with essential technological skills for everyday life and potential employment opportunities.
- Resettlement Topics:
- Cover topics pertinent to successful resettlement, including cultural orientation, social norms, community integration, navigating governmental processes, accessing healthcare, and understanding basic legal rights.
- Cultural Sensitivity and Integration:
- Foster an inclusive and culturally sensitive learning environment, encouraging open discussions and mutual understanding among guests of diverse backgrounds.
- Support Services Referral:
- Provide guidance and referrals to support services available during the resettlement process, assisting guests in accessing additional resources as needed.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in English Language, Education, Civic Education, or related fields with two years of relevant professional experience, or
- Complete High School degree from an accredited institution with four years of relevant professional experience
- Experience in non-formal camp education or education in emergencies is a plus.
Experience
- Proven experience in teaching English language skills and integrating US civic education principles.
- Strong adaptability, agility, and innovative teaching methodologies to cater to diverse learning needs.
- Strong work ethics and commitment to humanitarian principles.
- Proven experience in teaching English and basic subjects to individuals from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
- Familiarity with US geography and cultural aspects relevant to newcomers to the United States.
Skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
- Good communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Ability to draft clearly and concisely reports.
- Good knowledge of Word, Excel, and Internet.
Languages
For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written).
DESIRABLE
Knowledge of Dari and Pashto is an advantage.
IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish.
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
