EDUCATION DIRECTOR POSITION

Kings River Conservancy is a non-profit organization whose mission is to conserve the Kings River and its environs from Pine Flat Dam to Hwy 99, to enhance access for all to safely enjoy the Kings River, and to educate the students and the public of the Kings River area in the natural world, humans’ interaction with the Kings River past and present, and all the benefits of outdoor activity. 

Under the direction of the Board of Directors, the Education Director, reporting to the Executive Director, plans, coordinates, and manages Kings River Conservancy’s educational programs, including day-to-day operations, as well as grant development and administration. The role of the KRC Education Director will be able to grow with the program and develop activities to realize the Conservancy’s education mission. 

Education Director areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:

  • Get Outdoors! Youth Led Program: monthly family-friendly Saturday events throughout the school year and summer day camp programs for youth ages 8-16 along the Kings River
  • School Field Trips: 4-hour field trips for 1st-5th grade classrooms and other specialty field trips as requested
  • Get Curious on the Kings: community education and recreation events (typically on Saturday mornings)
  • Big Fresno Fair Booth: staffing KRC booth at education days at the Big Fresno Fair
  • Other community outreach events as needed

POSITION DUTIES

  • Program management duties:
    • Developing and nurturing relationships with local schools, districts, homeschools, and youth organizations to recruit participants in various education activities
    • Promoting, scheduling, overseeing, organizing, and facilitating school field trips
    • Planning, organizing, and implementing all aspects of the Get Outdoors! Program, including mentorship for 8 high school-aged Teen Counselors
    • Training new volunteers and docents, scheduling docents as needed for field trips and activities
    • Ensuring that education activities have the necessary supplies and equipment
    • Grant management, including descriptions and narratives for grant applications, and recordkeeping, budget management, invoicing, compliance, and reporting for grant-funded programs
  • Program development duties:
    • Identifying trends and needs in education and recreation
    • Development of culturally and educationally relevant curriculum and activities for varying age levels
    • Participating in the conception and development of new educational and recreation programs to expand KRC’s reach to local communities
    • Assisting with grant application development
  • Other duties:
    • Attending board meetings and education committee meetings
    • Attending outreach events on behalf of KRC when needed
    • Other duties as assigned

  • Bachelor’s Degree or a degree of higher learning from an accredited college/university in Environmental Science, Education, Recreation Administration, or a combination of experience and education in a related field
  • Working knowledge and understanding of youth development, NGSS and Common Core grade level standards, environmental science, and/or outdoor recreation best practices
  • Record of commitment to diversity and advocacy for diverse and underserved communities, and proven experience working successfully to create an inclusive working environment
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Access to reliable transportation, including carrying adequate auto insurance on personal vehicle as required by CA state law, and insurability by KRC carrier if utilizing KRC vehicle
  • While performing the duties of this job, this position is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear; carry up to 40 lbs; and work outdoors in varying conditions and on uneven ground

TIME COMMITMENT AND COMPENSATION

This is a regular, part-time hourly position at $37/hour, averaging approximately 20 hours per week (actual hours may vary depending on scheduled activities at any given time), but not to exceed 80 hours per month without advance permission from the Executive Director.

Program hours typically take place on weekdays and Saturdays, with some evening hours required as needed.
