Education for Action Manager

Lake George is one of the clearest and cleanest lakes in the world, a testament to decades of protection led by the Lake George Association. 

The Lake George Association (LGA) is seeking a passionate and collaborative Education for Action Manager to lead environmental education and community engagement initiatives that inspire stewardship and mobilize action to protect Lake George. 

This position plays a central role in translating science into engaging, actionable learning experiences for residents, schools, visitors, businesses, municipalities, and community partners. Working closely across LGA’s Science, Advocacy, Solutions, Partnerships and Communications teams, the Education for Action Manager develops and implements programs that deepen understanding of freshwater protection and empower people to take meaningful action on behalf of Lake George. 

The role combines environmental education, project management, curriculum development, staff leadership, and community outreach. The Education for Action Manager is expected to develop and advance educational initiatives that align with LGA’s science-informed, systems-based approach to protecting Lake George water quality and clarity, with a focus on programming that can drive meaningful community understanding, stewardship, and long-term impact. The position also oversees LGA’s Floating Classroom educational programming and supervises seasonal educators and vessel staff.

Key Responsibilities

Educational Programming & Community Engagement 

  • Develop and lead environmental education initiatives focused on stewardship, advocacy, and protection of Lake George
  • Design and teach engaging educational programs for youth, adults, schools, residents, visitors, businesses, and community groups
  • Translate freshwater science and environmental research into accessible and actionable learning experiences
  • Plan and implement community science activities that engage volunteers and increase public awareness of water quality and watershed protection

Curriculum Development 

  • Develop educational materials, lesson plans, and resources tailored to diverse audiences and age groups
  • Align educational content with New York State educational standards, when appropriate
  • Incorporate current science, watershed protection strategies, and systems-level environmental thinking into programming

Program & Staff Management 

  • Manage educational project logistics, schedules, staffing, and materials
  • Hire, train, supervise, and support seasonal environmental educators and Floating Classroom staff
  • Ensure staff and volunteers receive appropriate safety and educational training

Partnerships & Outreach 

  • Build and maintain relationships with schools, municipalities, nonprofit partners, businesses, and community organizations
  • Collaborate across LGA departments to align educational programming with organizational priorities and initiatives
  • Support outreach and communications efforts related to educational programs and events

Evaluation, Reporting & Fundraising Support 

  • Track participation, program effectiveness, and educational outcomes
  • Prepare reports for internal and external stakeholders
  • Manage and collaborate on grant proposals, grant reporting, and fundraising efforts that support educational initiatives

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework, degree, or relevant experience in environmental science, environmental education, ecology, teaching, instructional design, or a related field
  • Experience in environmental education, scientific program management, outdoor education, or related work
  • Demonstrated ability to engage diverse audiences through education and outreach
  • Strong communication, organizational, and project management skills
  • Experience supervising educators, staff, volunteers, or seasonal teams preferred
  • Familiarity with freshwater ecology, water quality, or watershed protection concepts
  • Experience with community outreach, grant writing, or public engagement initiatives preferred
  • Comfort working outdoors and on the water in varying conditions
  • Boater’s license and boating experience preferred
  • Familiarity with the Adirondacks or Lake George region preferred

Physical Demands & Work Environment

This role includes both office and outdoor work and may involve: 

  • Carrying equipment up to 25 lbs through uneven terrain
  • Teaching and working aboard a moving boat for extended periods
  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Swimming ability required

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $65,000–$80,000, commensurate with experience
