Job Summary
The Education IT Web Developer applies advanced software concepts and objectives to medium to large website and web application projects of broad scope and complexity, working in concert with business systems analysts, IT architects, product managers, UX and service designers, and project managers within Education IT and across Enterprise Systems teams. These projects often involve challenges with sourcing data from systems of record, defining role-based access and views, applying accessible pattern libraries and design systems, and working with designers, analysts, product managers, and IT architects to translate user stories into shippable technical features. They regularly resolve highly complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. They select tools, methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to obtain results, in concert with other developers in the community of practice and across the UC system. The Educational IT Web Developer has a full understanding of industry practices of front-end and back-end development with content management systems like Drupal, and practical experience with multiple development technologies like PHP, enterprise database platforms (GraphQL, PostgresQL, Oracle), Javascript (everything from ECMAscript to Ember to Angular to React, Vue.js, and Node.js), HTML, CSS, and API data feeds (JSON/JWT, XML), all while ensuring accessibility and security. They are committed members of and contributors to the developer community, and they demonstrate best practices for DevOps, code review, secure coding, unit, and user acceptance testing, and relevant policies and procedures of a large academic enterprise. With a focus on equitable access, this position uses exceptional communication skills to lead and work within diverse, cross-functional teams to ensure all campus users are provided with an optimal educational technology environment for 21st-century health sciences education.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% – 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.
For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

UCSF IT provides education, research, and health technology services, along with shared infrastructure, security, analytics, application, and customer support services, and is essential to the organization’s ability to support growth, mitigate security risk, and manage, store, and share sensitive information. This position works with the Web and Mobile Applications, Web Services, and Developer Experience teams in Enterprise Systems, and works on technology projects that affect all aspects of UCSF’s education mission. The Education IT unit is charged with developing collaborative relationships, processes, and services that appropriately enable the education community to execute its mission. With a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, the Education IT team is actively working to establish a computing architecture and services to support digital equity and digital transformation to support and advance the UCSF education mission.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training
- 2+ years of experience with web measurement and testing tools, including analytics, tag management, accessibility, and privacy frameworks.
- Advanced knowledge of secure software development, including experience with code scanning and lint tools.
- 2+ years of experience developing content management systems with/in PHP, SQL (and its variants), Javascript (and its variants), HTML, CSS, JSON, and with WCAG 2.1 compliance.
- Highly advanced skills associated with software specification, design, modification, implementation, and deployment of large-scale scope.
- Demonstrated ability to understand functional needs and how systems can support those needs. Demonstrated ability to develop conversion and system implementation plans with business systems analysts and service designers.
- Advanced experience with the identification and use of code and pattern libraries software documentation and community forums.
- Advanced experience with planning for deployment and creation of measurement and feedback mechanisms, including adoption and usability metrics.
- Demonstrated software repository skills.
- Experience developing and executing complex test plans. Demonstrated knowledge and skills working with DevOps tools and CI/CD pipelines.
- Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical faculty, staff, and students at various levels in the organization.
- Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated complex problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and work with management regularly.
- Thorough experience with common programming tools and integrated development environments. Demonstrated ability to help set and follow software specifications. Experience contributing to application development communities of practice.
Preferred Qualifications
- Excellent project leadership and management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to contribute technical narrative to grant and other funding proposals.
- 2+ years of experience in a large academic enterprise.
