Education & Outreach Coordinator (Part-time)

This is a part-time position (25-30 hours/week). Initial funding for the position comes from the Lenawee Conservation District (LCD). Upon hire, candidate’s duties will include seeking additional/alternative funding sources.
The Lenawee Conservation District is a local unit of state government, assisting landowners with the conservation and management of their natural resources.
Position Objective:
The purpose of this position is to assist the LCD by providing both general and program specific outreach and educational activities in an effort to increase the LCD’s visibility to the public, and to encourage understanding and awareness of programs and services offered by the District.
This position will be required to work collaboratively with District staff, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, & Energy (EGLE), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA), as well as other State and Local agencies, and will be an employee of the Lenawee Conservation District.
Primary Educational and Public Relation Duties:
- Market District programs and projects through various mediums to promote the positive image of the Lenawee Conservation District
- Search out and apply for educational and outreach funding opportunities – 2-4hr/week
- Promote and publicize special events and activities of the District – 2-4hr/week
- Attend various township, city, and county meetings to understand local issues and offer LCD services as appropriate – 2-4hr/week
- Upgrade and continuously update the District website. Maintain District social media accounts 1-2hr/week
- Coordinate and continually update education resources for distribution 2hr/week
- Coordinate workshops and tours for conservation education – 2hr/week
- Develop mailings, brochures, videos, and other relevant content to educate businesses, contractors, students, and homeowners and to promote district programs and activities – 4hr/week
- Receive phone calls, visitors, correspondence, requests for assistance and appointments
- Work with district, NRCS, and MDARD staff to provide educational and publicity information and programs including, but not limited to: tree sale, Adopt-A-Hwy, Center for Excellence, CRP, MAEAP, Farm Bill, water quality, soil erosion, special programs and grants
- Assist with Annual Meeting, workshops, field days, special meetings, and reports
- Duties as recorded in the annual plan of work
- Coordinate Adopt-A-Hwy pick-ups
- Work with District Manager on District marketing projects
- Promote District profile within the county and communities through networking with other agencies and in the media
- Create and maintain email lists and mailing lists
- Provide conservation education to schools, organizations, and individuals – 2hr/week
- Other duties as assigned
Working Conditions:
The Education & Outreach Coordinator is supervised by the District Manager of the Lenawee Conservation District.
- Annual completion of a work agreement and annual performance evaluations are required.
- Travel to/from farm locations within and occasionally outside of Lenawee County is required. Additional travel for educational/training opportunities may be required.
- Position is expected to work from the Lenawee Conservation District office in Adrian, MI at least 2 days of the week, and may telework the remaining hours as appropriate
- Position expected to work 20-30 hours/week. Specific schedule TBD (e.g. 5 days 4-6 hr/day; 3-4 days 8hr/day)
- Position is compensated at a rate of $20-$22/hr commensurate with experience. Benefits are not offered
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, advertising, communications, journalism, or public relations preferred. Equivalent experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree.
- Knowledge of website design and ability to create and edit video content preferred.
- Excellent computer skills
- Exceptional organizational, time management, and written/verbal communication skills
- Ability to work cooperatively with other staff/entities
- Ability to work outdoors in varying conditions and terrain
- Ability to lift materials up to 50lbs
- Maintain a valid Michigan driver’s license with a safe driving record
- Must pass a federal background check
