The purpose of the position is twofold. The first is to promote gender transformative education in the East Asia and Pacific region through managing a programme, providing technical support to UNICEF country offices in the region and supporting regional coordination concerning gender transformative education. The position is also to support the global work of the UN Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI) on school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV).
Management of the EAPRO gender transformative education programme in Southeast Asia;
Technical support to UNICEF Country Offices in East Asia and the Pacific to strengthen gender transformative education work;
Support to regional coordination concerning gender transformative education work pertaining to the mandates of both UNGEI and UNICEF EAPRO;
Support to UNGEI’s work on SRGBV through the Global Working Group to End SRGBV.
Management of the EAPRO gender transformative education programme in Southeast Asia;
Technical support to UNICEF Country Offices in East Asia and the Pacific to strengthen gender transformative education work;
Support to regional coordination concerning gender transformative education work pertaining to the mandates of both UNGEI and UNICEF EAPRO;

- Management of the Southeast Asia regional gender transformative education programme. The programme aims at: (i) system-level impact by advancing gender transformative education policies, curricula and pedagogy with focus countries of Cambodia and Viet Nam; (ii) school and community level impact through empowering the most marginalized girls with 21st-century learning and skills; and (iii) regional exchange, focusing on policy mapping, capacity building, advocacy and evidence generation through cross-border collaboration on gender transformative education
- Support programme management/oversight and coordination for the Empowered and Equal Futures for Girls in Southeast Asia programme to support timely delivery of activities and outputs, in close collaboration with the EAPRO Regional Gender Adviser and Country Offices (COs).
- Provide technical assistance to COs on programme related matters, and follow-ups.
- Coordinate implementation for the activities within the regional component of the programme (Output 3) mentioned above to ensure timely completion of results and deliverables, including organizing regional meetings, coordinating research outputs and provide and contributing technical expertise.
- Monitor progress, including through field missions, and contribute to the external evaluation of the programme.
- Communicate, collaborate and participate in virtual and face to face meetings with programme partners, including regional partners, such as SEAMEO, ASEAN, UNESCO, UNWomen, Safe to Learn, and national level partners, as required.
- Prepare draft and, in consultation with the supervisor, ensure finalization of donor reports and other knowledge management products and documentation to showcase the results/progress of the programme, including communications products.
Technical support to UNICEF Country Offices in East Asia and the Pacific, and the Regional Office to strengthen gender transformative education work:
- Provide technical support to UNICEF Country Offices (COs) in the East Asia and Pacific region on gender transformative education in their education programmes.
- Support the EAPRO Education and Gender team on gender transformative education programming and its related tasks.
- Collaborate with EAPRO’s relevant sections and units, especially Child Protection and Gender, to address violence in and around schools and to promote safe to learn and students’ well-being with a gender lens, to ensure coherent support to UNICEF COs.
- Prepare and update EAPRO Education’s proposals and investment case documents focusing on gender and education and prepare inputs for reporting as relevant.
Support to regional coordination concerning gender transformative education work pertaining to the mandates of both UNGEI and UNICEF EAPRO:
- Share UNICEF and UNGEI’s work and experience on gender transformative education in the region with UNESCO, UNWomen, UNFPA, and other partners to improve coordination and complementarity.
- Represent UNICEF in the relevant coordination groups at the regional level, including through not limited to, School Health and Well-being working group under the Learning and Education (LE) 2030+.
- Support UNGEI’s GTE work in the region, including by leading and facilitating the regional consultations in the run up to the annual convenings of the Feminist Network for Gender Transformative Education, which is the movement and space for bringing in global majority experience on gender and education, led by UNGEI.
Support to UNGEI global work on SRGBV:
- Contribute to global advocacy and coalition building in the field of SRGBV by supporting UNGEI’s co-chairing functions of the Global Working Group to End SRGBV as per agreed priorities and workplans.
- Support the continuous development and improvement of UNGEI’s SRGBV knowledge hub by leveraging the knowledge and expertise of the Global WG to End SRGBV, as well as by initiating and providing technical inputs to global public goods.
- Contribute to learning and capacity development in the field of SRGBV through supporting the development and delivery of training courses, organization of learning/experience sharing events.
- Lead and support the conceptualization and implementation of global and regional advocacy events in consultation with the Global WG to end SRGBV.
To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…
- An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in a relevant area, e.g. education, gender, programme management, and/or child protection or area related to social services, development studies, political or social sciences, public policies;
- Academic credentials in gender are a strong asset.
- A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience at the international or regional level in managing gender focused education programme.
- 3 years of experience in designing, implementing, managing, and delivering results-based programmes/projects on gender-transformative education, gender-based violence against children or similar is an asset.
- Experience in school related gender-based violence, or related issues, is an asset.
- Experience in providing technical support to partners, governments, UN agencies, etc. on gender transformative education is an asset.
- Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
- Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
