In the Pacific we work in Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu: These 14 Pacific island countries are home to 2.3 million people, including 1.2 million children and youth, living on more than 660 islands and atolls stretching across 17.2 million square kilometers of the Pacific Ocean, an area comparable to the combined size of the United States of America and Canada. Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Solomon Islands, and Tuvalu are classified as Fragile States according to World Bank/OECD criteria.

How can you make a difference?

Under the supervision of the Chief of Field Office and with guidance from the Education team in Suva, the Education Specialist (Early Childhood Development) with the UNICEF Pacific Multi-Country Office based in Samoa will support the development and preparation of the Education and ECD programme and is responsible for managing, implementing, monitoring, evaluating and reporting progress within the multi-country programme. The Specialist will be required to provide technical guidance and management support throughout the programming processes to facilitate the administration and achievement of results on education programmes/projects to improve learning outcomes and equitable and inclusive education, as well as holistic early childhood development especially for children who are marginalized, disadvantaged and excluded in society.

The Education and ECD Specialist contributes to achievement of results according to plans, allocation, results based-management approaches and methodology, as well as UNICEF’s Strategic Plans, standards of performance, and accountability framework.

Education

  • An advanced university degree in one of the following fields is required: education, economics, psychology, sociology, public health, or another relevant technical field.

Work experience

  • A minimum of five years of professional experience in programme planning, management, and/or research in education and in early childhood development related areas is required.
  • Experience working in a developing country is considered as an asset.
  • Relevant experience in a UN system agency or organization is considered as an asset.

Languages

Fluency in English is required as well as knowledge of a local language of the duty station is considered as an asset.
