The Latino Heritage Internship Program seeks to engage ethnically and racially diverse young professionals in natural resource careers.

Eligibility Requirement:

  • A personal vehicle is required for this position.

Position Description: 

The intern would assist the superintendent in the development of a land protection plan for the park. The project would involve reviewing county records and National Park Service land records for documentation of utility easements, other right-of-way documentation, and park boundary issues or discrepancies. Using the cultural landscape report as a guide, the land protection plan would outline high-priority land issues, including but not limited to land acquisition and easements.

The intern will complete a list of existing easements and right-of-way documentation, as well as a list of those right-of-ways that lack documentation. They will also develop a map that shows the right-of-ways, easements, and park boundaries. The map will include any identified potential land acquisitions from the cultural landscape report or the superintendent.

Responsibilities:

  • Work independently
  • Be self-motivated
  • Research-oriented, with experience in research
  • Database/Excel experience
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS
  • Ability to hike to somewhat rugged areas to evaluate right-of-ways, etc.

Qualifications:

The intern should be an upper-level undergraduate who has completed coursework involving research techniques, such as database searches, archives, and primary sources. Experience with ArcGIS is a plus. The intern should have knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft products, such as Word and PowerPoint. The intern should have experience in map reading. Some of the work will involve outdoor hiking in somewhat rugged terrain. The intern should be able to work independently but also collaborate with other park staff as necessary.

Public Land Corps Non-Competitive Hiring Authority (PLC)
The Public Land Corps Non-Competitive Hiring Authority is a special hiring authority available to qualifying interns. The intern must be between the ages of 18 and 30 years old, inclusive, or a veteran up to age 35 and complete 640 hours of work on an appropriate conservation project to be eligible for this hiring authority. Upon successful completion of the PLC project(s), the intern is eligible for two years to be hired non-competitively into a federal seasonal, term, or permanent position. The applicant must apply to a PLC-eligible position advertised on USAJobs.gov and selected off a non-competitive certificate of eligibility.
