Tamara Smith MP is the first woman to hold the seat of Ballina and the first Greens MP in a regional seat in any Parliament of Australia

Our small, passionate Electorate Office team work to support the MP in a fast paced, high demand environment.

We provide exceptional one-on-one support to constituents as well as building strong relationships with organisations and stakeholders to advance the Greens principles of social and economic justice, environmental sustainability, grassroots democracy and non-violence.

About the position

The Electorate Officer (Constituent Support & Office Manager) is the front facing public liaison for the Member for Ballina and oversees all constituent and local community inquiries. The role supports the Member to manage ongoing constituent matters including referrals, advocacy, and written and verbal representations.

The Electorate Officer is the first point of contact for the community including vulnerable and disadvantaged people. The position is also responsible for the day-to-day management of the office, providing administrative support to the MP and other staff in their respective areas of communications, parliament and policy and community engagement.

Key responsibilities

  • Clerical support for the Electorate Office and Member
  • Facilitate key communications with constituency and stakeholders including face-to-face interactions, phone liaison and drafting of written correspondence
  • Maintain confidential files and documents as well as online file management via SharePoint
  • Process incoming and outgoing mail, filing correspondence and maintain records; and
  • Coordinate local Member events and community engagement opportunities.

Selection criteria

Essential

  1. Excellent computer skills including demonstrated proficiency using client management databases such as NationBuilder, Voter ID, or other Customer Management systems, as well as proficiency working across Google Workspace and Microsoft Office
  2. Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively manage phone inquiries, liaise with community groups and non-government organisations, as well as parliamentary staff, MP offices, and other government departments
  3. Strong writing skills including the ability to draft formal correspondence, and constituent focused written communication materials including E communications
  4. Demonstrated high level organisational skills, ability to work effectively under pressure, and manage competing priorities to meet deadlines
  5. Demonstrated capacity to exercise sound judgement and ability to perform at a high standard under limited supervision and within a team environment.

Desirable

  1. Knowledge of the key issues impacting our local region, and the functions of councils
  2. Commitment to the core principles of the Greens and an interest in, and understanding of, the Australian political context
  3. Experience in community organising, campaigns or event co-ordination.
