Job Description

Your responsibilities

As an Electrical Engineer within the Cabling Section in the Engineer Department (EN), you’ll play a key role in expanding, strengthening, and maintaining CERN’s signal and power cable installations, required for various systems within the CERN accelerators. As part of your duties, you will be actively involved in the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project, which requires the installation of over 1,200 km of signal cables in the next three years. You will work closely with equipment experts and take part in technical discussions to ensure the optimal design of the cabling systems.

You responsibilities will be to:

  • Analyse requests for new signal and power cables and modification to existing ones;
  • Participate to site surveys to assess installation conditions;
  • Conduct technical studies, including the definition of cable routes (considering cable trays occupancy, EMC, and safety rules), and verification of the compatibility between cables and connectors;
  • Design patch panels to segment cable installations, particularly for areas requiring periodic replacement due to radiation exposure or to facilitate execution;
  • Prepare execution documentation (cable lists, material lists, planning, risk assessments, etc.) for CERN’s installation contractors;
  • Organize, supervise and ensure safety on your worksites, requiring interactions with contractors and CERN users from other groups/departments;
  • Develop, structure, and oversee project documentation, including progress reports, design reports, spending profiles, and schedules;
  • Review, write, and enhance procedures for connector assembly on cables, as well as testing and installation processes.

Your profile

Skills

  • Experience in managing electrical infrastructure projects;
  • Significant experience in designing and installing signal and power cables, along with their associated connectors;
  • Excellent team-working attitude;
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background in Electrical Engineering (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master’s degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
