Job Description:

The Facilities Planning and Management Department at Iowa State University is hiring Electrician Trainees. The Trainees will be enrolled in a 4-year Apprenticeship Program which will include on-the-job training and classroom education through ABC of Iowa. At the end of the program, the Trainees will be prepared to test to become a Journeyman Electrician. The successful candidates will be motivated and committed individuals with a strong desire to learn and work as part of a team.  Trainees will start with Iowa State University for on-the- job training. Regular work hours are between 7:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday – Friday  and then attend classes in the fall October through December for classroom training In Grimes through ABC. Daytime classes meet for three months , four days a month and starting in October . All four days are consecutive (Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)

All Trainees must be 18 years of age and have earned a high school diploma or high school equivalency (GED or HSED). Training Sponsors need to have a copy of each apprentice’s diploma and transcripts in their apprentice file.

The undersigned Trainee agrees to attend ABC of Iowa Apprenticeship courses in Grimes, Iowa, completing the required levels of attendance, in class work and testing, and web-based work and testing that is needed to pass each individual level, consisting of Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4.  Costs associated with the training are paid by Iowa State University. The starting pay for this position is $18.63 per hour. Trainees will receive a pay increase at each of level of completion in the apprenticeship. Upon program completion, pay will be increased to the starting wage for an Electrician I. The trainee will sign an Apprenticeship Fees reimbursement Agreement as part of the hiring process.

Under direct supervision, receives work experience and related training instruction to develop the knowledge and skill necessary to perform at the journey level upon completion of the training program to install and repair electrical systems and equipment. Participates in training that is required to progress to eligibility for the Electrician I classification.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Learns how to install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair and replace electrical systems and electrical operated equipment (generally less than 600V), including but not limited to circuit breakers, relays, switches, wiring, conduit, receptacles, and magnetic starters and controls.
  • Learns how to install, maintain troubleshoot, repair and replace electrical equipment including but not limited to electric motors, transformers, generators, lights, fixtures, bulbs , tubes, motor control systems and meters.
  • Learns how to estimate materials needed and record time and materials expended on each work order; and perform preventative maintenance on electrical equipment and systems.
  • Learns how to draw layouts, reads and interprets blueprints, schematics and other drawings.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, and the public.
  • Ability to learn all other knowledge, skills, and abilities listed in the Electrician I class description.
