Electronics Engineering Technologist (Swing Shift)

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Engineering Division has an opening for an Electronics Engineering Technologist (Swing Shift) to join the team.
In this role, you will provide advanced technical support of a variety of electronics systems. Test, evaluate, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain complex electronic and electro-mechanical equipment and systems with the use of technological skills, scientific principles, and mathematics.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Read and interpret schematics, sketches, parts lists, component layout diagrams, assembly instructions, maintenance, calibration, and operating manuals. 
  • Perform general troubleshooting, repair and calibration of complex electronics or electro-mechanical circuits, on commercial and custom-built equipment, instruments and systems to component level applying a high degree of technical creativity, innovation, expertise, and judgment. 
  • Run system, board, and component level diagnostic routines on complex systems by following general procedures. Plan work methods, determine type of tests, select test equipment, and analyze test results to assure performance compliance with technical specifications.
  • Perform routine maintenance, repair and calibration of complex electronics or electro-mechanical circuits, mechanisms, equipment, instruments, and systems, by applying technical concepts that require both standard and unique methods to ensure optimum functioning of equipment. 
  • Operate a variety of hand, power and machine tools, and test equipment.
  • Assist in the design of general electronics equipment or systems; provide design details and recommend modifications to engineering designs as required. Generate rough sketches and drawings of electronic equipment to communicate the modifications and designs.

What is Required:

Level 2:

  • Minimum of 2-4 years of related work experience in performing advanced technical support in the field of electronics test, maintenance and development.
  • Substantial understanding of electronics theory, electro-mechanical, scientific principles, and mathematics.
  • Knowledge and ability to use complex test equipment, diagnostic routines and procedures and appropriate hand,and power tools of the trade.
  • Ability to correctly interpret complex schematics, and assembly, calibration, maintenance, and operating manuals.
  • Ability to safely operate a variety of electronics test equipment including oscilloscopes, digital and analog multimeters, function generators and pulse generators.
  • Work experience performing general troubleshooting, repair, and calibration of complex electronics.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment to successfully accomplish assignments.
  • General knowledge of equipment design procedures and techniques.
  • General personal computer application skills with spreadsheets, databases, and word processors.
  • Color vision sufficient to discern wiring and component color codes, and safety related colored signs, lamps and warning devices. 
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders, work from heights and confined spaces, and lift 23 kg (50 lbs.).

 

Level 3 

(in addition to the requirements of the Level 2)

  • Minimum of 4-6 years of related work experience in performing advanced technical support in the field of electronics test, maintenance and development
  • Advanced understanding of electronics theory, electro-mechanical, scientific principles, and mathematics.
  • Work experience performing specialized troubleshooting, repair, and calibration of complex electronics.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders, work from heights and confined spaces, and lift 23 kg (50 lbs.).

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • An AA Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology, Computer Science or Computer Technology or the equivalent in formal military or industrial training.
  • Computer-Aided electronics drafting and design-documentation skills.
  • Broad knowledge of high voltage and high current power supplies and RF systems.
  • General electronics drafting and design-documentation skills.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 70E electrical safety work practices.

 

If Hired at Level 2:

The full hourly range for this position is $33.42-$48.47. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

 

If Hired at Level 3:

The full hourly range for this position is $40.63-$58.90. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.
  • This is a swing shift position. The first 6 months of employment will be Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm. After 6 months, the permanent shift will be 3:30 pm-12:00 midnight, with a rotating schedule of 7 days on/3 days off, 7 days on/4 days off.

  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
