In Burundi, UNICEF has a very diverse portfolio of responsibilities but all with the same objective which is to assist the Government and other stakeholders to fulfill children’s economic, social, cultural, political, and civil rights. The UNICEF country program in Burundi aims to improve the lives of children and women in the following key areas: Child and maternal health, Nutrition, Education, Child Protection, Water, sanitation and hygiene, Social Policy and Advocacy, Adolescent empowerment and community resilience, and Humanitarian response.

How can you make a difference?

Under the supervision of the Chief WASH, the WASH Emergency Specialist will lead and support WASH responses to humanitarian emergencies across the country with the following key functions:

  • Humanitarian WASH preparedness and response
  • Programme development and planning
  • Programme management, monitoring and delivery of results, evaluation and reporting
  • Networking and partnership-building

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Minimum requirements:

  • Education: An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in one of the following fields is required: sanitary engineering, Water & sanitation engineering, civil engineering or another relevant technical field
  • Work Experience: A minimum of five (5 years) of relevant professional experience in one or more of the following areas is required: in WASH Emergency and Development related programmes or another related area is required.
  • A minimum of five years of professional experience in WASH and development-related programmes for developing countries is required;Proven experience in leading WASH emergency programmes in response to public health emergencies (Mpox, Cholera, Ebola, Marburg, other epidemic crisis); Relevant experience in a UN system agency or organization is considered an asset.
  • Language Requirements: Fluency in French and English is required. Knowledge of the duty station’s local language and country context is considered an asset.

Should you be selected for a position with UNICEF, you either must be inoculated as required or receive a medical exemption from the relevant department of the UN. Otherwise, the selection will be canceled.

Eligible staff members on fixed-term, continuing or permanent contracts applying to IP TA positions in a duty station designated as L2/L3, may be able to retain a lien and their fixed-term entitlements, subject to approval by their Head of Office. The conditions of the temporary assignment will vary depending on the status of their post and relocation entitlements may be limited as per the relevant policies.
