Position Title: Employment Support Worker (Afghan refugee focused)
Language: (Speaking Farsi, Dari or Pashto)
Start Date: September 2024
End date: March 31, 2025
Hourly rate of pay: $27.56/hour
Reports To: Manager, SWIS and Refugee Programs
Hours: Full-time (35 hours/week)
Location: Remote/NYCH sites

Position summary: 

This position will be working with the Afghan refugee community in providing employment support services to help clients with their short-term employment needs.  This position will also work with the NYCH’s other internal employment related programs and to better support clients with their long-term employment needs.

Main responsibilities:

  • Conduct outreach in the Afghan refugee community for program participants and connect with other staff for internal referrals
  • Carry out initial client assessments, helping clients identify their strengths and assets while exploring their needs and challenges in employment
  • Provide one-on-one supportive counselling, and provide information and referrals to Afghan refugees who look for employment opportunities
  • Help clients with their short-term employment needs, e.g., resume, cover letter, interviews, etc. and help them understand Canadian workplace culture
  • Work with internal employment related programs to better address clients’ long term employment needs
  • Refer clients to other external employment programs/services and conduct follow-ups to ensure their needs are met
  • Refers clients to mentorship program and networking opportunities to facilitate participants’ learning and connections
  • Research and share with clients on professional development opportunities, such as events and workshops, and source resources for clients
  • Develop and facilitate workshops for refugees on a range of employment related topics
  • Participate in committees and coalitions related to refugee and employment issues
  • Maintain and submit records and evaluative data around participant progress and program outcomes
  • Participate in team and broader NYCH training and activities as required

 Education 

  • Combination of education and experience in social work and/or career/employment counseling.

Qualifications and Experience 

  • Minimum 1 year employment related working experience with newcomers to Canada
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in Farsi, Dari or Pashto is a must
  • Extensive experience in providing one-on-one support and supportive counselling
  • Demonstrated experience developing and facilitating group training sessions
  • Knowledge of issues facing newcomers to Canada
  • Experience in crisis response and intervention work
  • Excellent communication skills in English; other language an asset
  • Experience using a variety of software/platforms, knowledge of online tools that enhance services

Additional Requirements 

  • A successful clearance of a police reference check will be required
  • Candidates will be asked to declare their vaccination status during recruitment process. Successful candidates will be required to provide proof before or directly upon the start of their employment.

Working Conditions  

  • Remote work during pandemic stages where in-person/on-site work is restricted
  • Typical working hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday, with occasional additional hours during evenings/weekends
  • Required to travel within the GTA to other NYCH and community sites, network/coalition meetings, conferences, etc. as required (when in-person meetings are safe and permitted).
