LOCATION: On-site in the Bear Yuba Land Trust (BYLT) office in Grass Valley, CA, with
work-from-home flexibility. BYLT provides a fully functioning office, and while permitting
hybrid work, expects all staff to utilize the office at least multiple days per week.

HOURS: 30 hours per week, some evenings and weekends required
REPORTS TO: Executive Director
HIRING RANGE FOR POSITION: $25 – $28 per hour

BENEFITS: Generous vacation and personal leave, 403b plan with employer matching up to 2% after one year, and 15 paid holidays per year (dependent on scheduled workdays). Employer sponsored Silver PPO Anthem Blue Cross health care plan.

Summary of Position:
The Engagement Manager (EM) is a public-facing, community-oriented leader responsible for developing, planning, and implementing a comprehensive volunteer program and assisting with planning and implementation of community outreach events. EM leads the development and coordination of a variety of educational and stewardship programs aimed at creating lasting bonds between local communities and the land, thereby inspiring future land conservation and stewardship. Community-based programs focus on bringing community members into a deeper relationship with the lands BYLT protects through regular hands-on volunteer opportunities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Duties include but are not limited to:

Volunteer Program Management

  • Enhance and expand BYLT’s existing Volunteer Program
  • Serve as BYLT’s lead staff and primary contact for volunteer management
  • Create monthly Volunteer Newsletter
  • Coordinate volunteer needs across the organization and promote volunteer opportunities to the public
  • Recruit, train, and direct work schedules for volunteers
  • Oversee tracking and reporting of volunteer time and create meaningful recognition for thanking volunteers
  • Assist in keeping volunteer pages updated on BYLT website
  • Work with Executive Director and Communications Manager to identify successes and shortcomings regarding volunteer recruitment and retention
  • Lead monthly Adopt-a-Highway workday

Community Engagement

  • Organize and support implementation of volunteer work parties and outreach events, with some evenings and weekends expected
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with local organizations that benefit BYLT’s mission of land conservation and outdoor recreation
  • Expand and sustain relationships with local schools and other youth-based organizations to create partnership opportunities on the lands and trails
  • Provide direct support to the Communication Manager for the organization of volunteer participation in BYLT’s community and fundraising events
  • Participate in community events by staffing BYLT table and recruiting volunteers
  • Develop debriefs after major volunteer events and provide recommendations for improvement
  • Support annual appeals and special campaigns with outreach and engagement, as needed

Event planning and production

  • Assist BYLT Staff with event planning and engagement
    o Lead partner coordination and community engagement
    o Manage volunteer roles for events

Marketing and Communications

  • Support implementation of BYLT’s annual communications plan
  • Support communication plans for media (radio, newspaper, community calendars, etc) to promote all events
  • Support the collection of inspiring stories and photographs from events and activities Management and Administration
  • Define, create, and manage the resources needed to support a successful volunteer program
  • Compile data and produce reports relevant to volunteer engagement
  • Attend BYLT Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee meetings
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent organizational, planning, time management, and critical thinking skills
  • 2+ years of experience in volunteer management and/or community engagement, preferably in the nonprofit sector
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to work collaboratively with a team as well as independently
  • Excellent presentation, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Self-starter able to work independently and successfully manage multiple projects and priorities
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and planning skills and ability to handle competing priorities
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff and volunteers in a team environment
  • Demonstrates initiative and provides follow-through on areas of responsibility
  • Computer skills required including proficiency with Word, Excel, and Outlook, and Google Drive

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graphic design experience, Canva and/or Adobe Creative Suite, proficiency a plus
  • Experience with website (WordPress), database (Salesforce), and email marketing (Mailchimp) management
  • Bilingual Spanish/English a plus
  • Experience creating content for social media
  • Photography and photo editing experience
  • Environmental education or interpretation experience a plus

PREFERRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE

A combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Experience:
A minimum of two years experience in volunteer coordination and/or nonprofit management is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Significant outdoor work is required in the planning and management of volunteer workdays, field trips to lands and trails, and events. Work is in a variety of terrain and weather conditions. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers, various pieces of office equipment and items for event setup. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear, sit or stand, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to work at altitude in an outdoor setting is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work in outside weather conditions, which may include extreme cold, windy wet and wintery conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in the office to loud in the field.

To date, BYLT has protected over 26,000 acres of the region’s natural open space, agricultural lands, forests, public trails, and watercourses and has built or maintained 50+ miles of local trails. BYLT actively works with a wide variety of local landowners, as well as local, state, and federal agencies and our local tribal leaders, to conserve important lands and build public trail systems which define and inform the region’s core values, economy, and character.
