We are introducing new technologies as we move towards our target state with a cloud first (private and public) approach in our hosting strategy and to transform our systems from a monolith to a microservice based system whilst decommissioning our legacy services and systems.We have a great opportunity for a Lab Engineering Lead to work in the Climate Lab where our purpose & vision is to build the next generation climate risk function enabling LBG to support the UK’s transition to a low-carbon economy, through developing climate risk data, metrics and models.The Lab is responsible for maintaining, transforming, and innovating the infrastructure and software required to ensure that our risk technology and data capabilities meet the bank’s needs now and in the future.About the role:Collaboration is critical to the success of this role! As the Engineering Lead you’ll operate collaboratively with the Lab Product Owner, other labs, technical teams, other platforms as well as other engineering leads within the platform. You’ll work hand-in-hand leading the Lab teams:Jointly assume the ownership, development, and accountability of Lab strategic and quarterly Objectives and Key Results and are incentivised against a balanced set of business and technology outcomes.Optimise, evolve, and deliver an efficient operating model.Support shaping of the backlog and prioritising outcomes which are essential to keep the solution / product in good health.Create an organisation that is truly data driven and providing the best value propositions to our customers.Define the What and Why the team deliver, and how through a combination of engineering solutions and changes to our ways of working i.e. agile and instrumentation.You’ll handle the successful delivery and maintenance of the core technology agenda within the Lab providing strategic direction and oversight of Data and Systems.You’ll be responsible for the technology roadmap, management of technical debt and other technical demands.You’ll be accountable for the technical solutions team that will design, build, or integrate, deploy, and run the system, particularly software, that supports the Data capability and operations with a focus on quality, resilience, low latency, reusability, accessibility by third parties and scalability.What you’ll needThe role will be suited to someone who combines inspirational leadership skills with strong technical experience and comes from an engineering background.As an inspirational leader, you:Enable a culture based on the fundamentals of psychological safety instilling confidence, authenticity, and trust throughout your teams.Create a culture of learning and continuous improvement through a “Fail Fast, Learn Faster” mentality within teams to experiment and test new ways of engineering, to act as a change agent for engineering and team culture, and to cultivate a systems-thinking and user-experience led design approach.Able to nurture teams, support them through a culture of openness and trust, and to make teams the best they can be.Have a strong passion for and technical understanding of data content systems and can provide support, knowledge and mentoring to the teams. This includes helping teams to use the best engineering practices, tooling, and methods and to encourage them to contribute towards inner-source activities and attend Meetups.Work with Agile Coaches to create opportunities for learning and growth for all Chapters whilst championing the principles and aims of transformation change.Encourage engineers to join Communities of Practice, Guilds and Working Groups to deliver peer-to-peer mentoring and joint engineering initiatives via coordinated sessions and Inner-Source delivery methods.As an Engineer, you:Will have extensive software engineering background with one or more programming languages.Understand the business area to facilitate the best solution design with team members and product owners.Are environment aware, can identify technical impediments / bottlenecks and work directly to resolve.Are technology agnostic and are willing to adapt approach in pursuit of the optimal solution.Understand Systems Thinking and Service Design to mitigate reactive solutions that leads to further technical debt.Understand measurement of change and work with teams to provide reassurance and mitigate behavioural change.Significant experience with agile development methods & tooling e.g., Scrum, Kanban, Jira & Confluence, and experience of leading & working as part of an agile team as well as understanding the relationship between agile definitions and automated delivery.Understand the benefits of BDD & TDD and ensure engineers write upfront tests against team defined stories.Are industry aware and understand the importance of new technical approaches to evolve solutions and the experience of the team.Have proven understanding of the entire software development lifecycle and experience in end- to- end delivery of software products along with knowledge of modern software development toolsets including DevOps, Continuous Integration, and Continuous Delivery.From a Governance and Compliance perspective, you’re:Accountable for ensuring that all Engineering work is carried out in accordance with Bank standards including all decision making.Accountable for maximising the safe delegation of authority and empowerment to Lab Chapters in line with the above and core principles of Transformation.About working for usOur focus is to ensure we’re inclusive every day, building an organisation that reflects modern society and celebrates diversity in/all its forms.We want our people to feel that they belong and can be their best, regardless of background, identity, or culture.We were one of the first major organisations to set goals on diversity in senior roles, create a menopause health package, and a dedicated Working with Cancer initiative.And it’s why we especially welcome applications from under-represented groups.We’re disability confident.
