Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s Engineering Division is seeking an Engineering Student Assistant to support the Advanced Light Source (ALS) project. This position involves working closely with the ALS-U engineering group to upgrade the facility. The ALS is a prominent scientific user facility, providing access to advanced x-ray, infrared, and ultraviolet light for various research fields. The ALS-U project aims to maintain the facility’s leadership in soft x-ray science. What You Will Do:
The student’s responsibilities will be tailored based on their skills and interests. Those inclined towards creating technical documents and quality assurance (QA) processes will focus on tasks related to documentation creation and manufacturing process development. Students interested in CAD and design will work on projects involving design, large assemblies, and manufacturing drawings. They will have opportunities to receive training in engineering tools used at LBNL. Specific duties may include:
· Performing 3D modeling and design using Creo Parametric CAD software.
· Converting 3D models to 2D engineering drawings.
· Assisting in assembling and documenting as-built documentation.
· Supporting the development of quality assurance documents like Work Instructions and Test Plans.
· Using mechanical design models to extract images for illustrating procedures in Work Instructions.
· Contributing to the development of project documentation.
· Assisting in other engineering tasks related to the Advanced Light Source Upgrade project.
· Participating in the development of engineering work processes and documentation.
What is Required:
· Full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing, currently enrolled in an engineering program or similar technical program.
· General understanding of Quality Assurance principles.
· Basic understanding of engineering principles.
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Doc platform.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to deliver clear presentations.
· Familiarity or proficiency with mechanical CAD modeling, with preference given to those with experience in mechanical CAD models.
· Programming experience.
Desired Qualification:
· Technical writing skills.
Notes:
· This is a part-time (8-16 hours/week) 1-year, student assistant appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
· Salary will be predetermined based on student step rates.
· The starting hourly wage for this position ranges from $18.07 to $23.42, depending on the number of years of education completed by the applicant. Candidates should note that they are responsible for covering their own housing and travel expenses.
· This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
· The position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, combining teleworking and on-site work at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab in Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are based on business needs. Individuals opting for a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
