Duties and Responsibilities
The internship in the ECLAC, Statistics Division, Santiago, will last 2 to 6 months, depending on the needs of the Office. Candidates may be selected throughout the posting period, on an “as-needed” basis. The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region’s economic and social development. Its mission includes the design, monitoring, and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise, and training to Governments, as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities. The intern reports directly to the appointed supervisor, and/or to senior staff to the , Statistics Division with respective or delegated authority. Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for carrying out the following: • Translate from English into Spanish and Spanish to English, subject to revision, documents covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean i.e. political, social, legal, economic, financial, administration, scientific and technical. • Conduct the necessary research using all available information sources. • Produce reliable and acceptable draft translations that accurately reflect the substance of the original language text along with accurate and faithful summary records of meetings. • Attend meetings as part of a team, take notes either directly or from statements delivered and subsequently user the notes to produce draft summary records, subject to revision. • Contribute to the compilation of terms in specific fields for review and validation by senior revisers. • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications/special skills
Be enrolled in, or have completed, of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). – For this internship, studies in the area of economic affairs, social science and/or statistics is desirable. No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in Spanish and English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language would be an asset. NOTE: “Fluency” equals a rating of ”fluent” in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and ¨knowledge of¨ equals a rating of ”confident” in two of the four areas.
