Environmental DNA Laboratory Technician

Job Description: Environmental DNA (eDNA) is DNA sloughed from organisms into the surrounding environment (such as skin cells from fish into a stream). eDNA is a powerful conservation tool for defining the distribution of endangered, rare, and invasive species. We are seeking a laboratory technician to aid in analysis of genetic samples for projects related to aquatic wildlife conservation.

Responsibilities include:

  • Organizing and cataloging samples
  • Data entry
  • Extracting DNA from filters
  • Analyzing eDNA samples via quantitative PCR
  • General lab tasks such as QAQC, supplies/inventory, equipment sterilization, and calibrations, cleaning lab spaces, building eDNA sampling kits.

In addition, the technician must have attention to detail, take detailed notes, and work independently as well as part of a team. This lab position will not involve fieldwork. The position provides valuable experience in laboratory procedures/equipment and rigorous scientific methodology. This position is sponsored by The National Genomics Center for Wildlife and Fish Conservation (NGC) at the US Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station and the University of Montana. Work will occur at the Rocky Mountain Research Station building in Missoula, MT and initial hiring will be through Univ. of Montana.

Hours per Week: 40 hours a week

Wage/Salary/Other Compensation: $17-19/hr with potential for wage increase upon exceptional performance.

Position start date and length: Flexible start date from May-July, and duration will be roughly 12 months with extension likely based upon performance.

Qualifications:’

Applicants must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or other related, applied science. Applicants are preferred to have completed Cellular and Molecular Biology or related course work and experience in laboratory procedures such as DNA extraction and qPCR analysis. Competitive applicants will be individuals who are responsible, punctual, and able to communicate and work well with others. Attention to detail is a must.
