We are seeking enthusiastic, conservation-minded people to commit to 11 months of service to protect Sierra Nevada natural resources and sustainable communities. During the year, SNAP members will gain skills and technical training, mentor with outstanding environmental leaders, and help to conserve some of our most treasured landscapes. SNAP AmeriCorps members are passionate and committed to the mission of the Sierra Nevada Alliance, SNAP and AmeriCorps. Member’s full-time commitment to serve at a nonprofit organization or public agency in the Sierra Nevada.

Community Edcation and Programs Associate:

Organizational Background:

SNA’s mission is to unite people and organizations to protect Sierra Nevada ecosystems and communities. For over 30 years, SNA has worked towards these goals through these and other programs: Member Group Program, community engagement and events, SierraCorps Forestry Fellows, Sierra Nevada AmeriCorps Partnerships, the Lake Tahoe Ambassador Program, and advocacy- including policy making and fundraising. We fight for the health of the region through resource sharing between organizations, public and private partnerships, communications to engage the public, generating capacity, and on-the-ground conservation and restoration efforts.

Organizational/Program Goals 2025-26:

• Increase public awareness of conservation issues in the Sierra Nevada and encourage people to become involved in the Alliance’s solution-focused programs.
• Increase engagement of Sierra Nevada Alliance’s existing audience and supporters.
• Create meaningful outreach, events, and programming that is centered on bettering the Sierra Nevada to encourage participation and action.

Member Service Plan Overview and Outcomes:The Community Education and Programs Associate’s role is to help increase community participation in conservation efforts by creating meaningful community events and resources to educate the public.

This position is also on the Lake Tahoe Ambassador Program team. This is a first-work experience that teaches high school and early-college age students to act as environmental protectors in the Tahoe basin. This position’s role will be to help implement educational components, including skills training throughout the season, and more.

Specific examples include:

• Plan Alliance events, including monthly educational webinars, naturalist events for the public, collaborative events with conservation community partners, and more.
• Major events include: Earth Week, Wild and Scenic Film Festival on Tour, Great Sierra River Cleanup, Monthly Webinar Series, and more.
• Recurrent community events include: mushroom foraging walks, naturalist talks and walks, outdoor events such as hiking and snowshoeing, conservation webinars, community meetings, and more
• Sample tasks include: Volunteer coordination and outreach, logistical event planning, coordination with event team members and vendors, soliciting donations, event setup and breakdown, etc.
• Represent the Alliance at tabling and outreach events in the community throughout the year.
• Develop an in-depth understanding of Alliance brand, mission, and vision, and represent this through all events, outreach, and media.
• Assist with management of the Alliance website; Assist with Alliance communications including written and visual communications to promote events and Alliance programs.
• Serve as the Alliance representative on local working groups including Take Care Tahoe and Take Care Sierra, and help lead the Take Care Sierra Campaign.
• Assist with planning and implementing educational trainings for the Lake Tahoe Ambassador Program.
• Assist with Ambassador program logistics and program needs as a vital team member.

Education and Outreach Coordinator

Organizational Background:

This AmeriCorps position will be shared between the Mother Lode Chapter of the Sierra Club and the Sierra Nevada Alliance. The member will work to serve some of California’s most precious watersheds.

The Mother Lode Chapter, with more than 20,000 members, stretches from Stanislaus County and Tuolumne County in the south to the Oregon border in the north, and from the western side of the Central Valley to the California/Nevada border on the east. Due to its large geography, the chapter is split into eleven local Sierra Club groups. The Tahoe Area Group (TAG) is so important because Lake Tahoe is in two states: Nevada and California so the TAG is also part of the Nevada Sierra Club Toiyabe Chapter.

We are one Sierra Club and Nationally. We know actions speak louder than words. That’s why we’ve built a national community of volunteers, advocates, and grassroots activists who show up when and where it counts. Our supporters have the tools and resources to make themselves heard in nearly every district in every state across the country. From securing protection for 439 parks and monuments, to winning passage of the Clean Air and Endangered Species Acts, to putting over 281 coal plants on the path to replacement with clean energy, to securing the right of every kid in America to visit a national park.

The Sierra Nevada Alliance exists to elevate and support Sierra ecosystems and communities. We are a hub for stewardship of the Sierra Nevada, which we achieve by empowering and collaborating with our partners. Our vision is that every Sierra ecosystem and community is healthy, resilient, and collectively cared for through thriving partnerships, as a legacy for future generations. The Sierra Nevada Alliance is proud to implement the Sierra Nevada AmeriCorps Partnership (SNAP). Each year, the Sierra Nevada Alliance places AmeriCorps members with partner conservation organizations throughout the Sierra Nevada.

Organizational/Program Goals 2025-26:

• Increase public awareness of Sierra Nevada Alliance, Sierra Nevada AmeriCorps Partnership, regional issues, programs, and what communities can do to act and get involved.
• Engage and outreach to Sierra Nevada Alliance’s SNAP members and Alumni, SNA members and supporters.
• Collaborate with SNAP Communications with Co-Branded SNA/Sierra Club Education and Outreach events.

While serving with the Tahoe Area Group (TAG) of the Mother Lode Chapter of the Sierra Club, the member will increase the engagement of existing membership in local environmental issues. The member will collaborate with our Environmental Justice in Tobacco Control Project staff and our Young Adult Advocacy Board, engagement, and retention program. Environmental conservation is essential in rural communities, given the devastating impact that tobacco cultivation, harvest, manufacturing, and use is having on the environment; environmental organizations need to work together with young people on solutions that benefit both groups.

National Service Benefits:

• Up to 30,500 living allowance for term of service, $2,773 per month.
• Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of hours for the enrolled term of service.
• Combined California For All Education Award (for Full Term members only) and the Segal Education Award for a total of $10,000. (FT/1700 hr members only)
• Healthcare, Dental, Vision coverage for members (FT/1700 hr members only)
• Childcare assistance if eligible (FT/1700 hr members only)
• Student Loan Deferment & Interest Forbearance if eligible.
• Member Development fund of $500 to support training, networking, and professional development opportunities that can be utilized and will be valued by future employers after the service term is completed.

National Service Qualifications:

• Must be 18+ years of age and high school graduates or GED recipients (or minimum of 17 and working toward a high school diploma or GED); members must agree to obtain either a diploma or GED before using an education award; meeting full list of member eligibility requirements in 45 CFR §2522.200(a)
• Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or lawful permanent resident
• Must participate in a national criminal history background check pursuant to 45 CFR §2540.200-206
