The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and Training to all Secretariat Entities, Peacekeeping and Special Political Missions, Agencies, Funds and Programmes of the UN system worldwide. This position is located in the Environmental Technical Support, Planning and Sourcing Support Section, Supply Chain Service, based in the United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) in Brindisi. The incumbent will report to the Team Lead Environmental Technical Support (ETS).

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Engineer (Energy pillar) will be responsible for the following duties: Administration • Introduces and implements the Department’s Environmental Guidelines in the mission and supports the strategy implementation’s working group on energy. • Provides guidance in accordance with Department of Operational Support Policy and Guidelines and host country environmental standards for the establishment and implementation of the mission’s environmental objectives and plan. • Supports missions in the development of their respective budget with focus on energy savings and improving energy production systems. • Prepares consolidated reports on environmental actions of all mission sites and identifies problem areas to be addressed by the relevant Sections within the mission. • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provides insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. 2. Planning • Develop conceptual design, feasibility studies and multi-year plans of hybrid energy systems including renewable energy, energy storage, diesel and power electronic equipment (inverters) to upgrade and improve power generation facilities in field missions.• Reviews statements of work, contracts and services for engineering projects related to the energy field, in accordance with international and local environmental standards. • Formulates and evaluates procedures and projects for the Environmental Unit. • Coordinates all activities related to environmental compliance in the mission’s military, police and civilian components. • Prepares energy action plans and strategy implementation plans, guidance materials and instructions aimed at achieving environmental objectives. 3. Implementation • Analyze and understand power and energy data from energy metering systems and fuel management systems to build up energy production and energy consumption detailed models and business cases. • Analyze and understand power and energy data from energy metering systems and fuel management systems to build up energy production and energy consumption detailed models and business cases. • Assess the existing energy infrastructure of the mission (including, but not limited to diesel generators power houses) and propose innovative technical solutions to reduce fuel consumption and operating cost (renewable energy, storage system, hybrid power station). • Design and implement electrical systems for energy infrastructure projects including power generation, metering, power transformation and power transmission in LV and MV. • Develops and implements training activities aimed at building mission capacity to meet mission environmental objectives. • Develops and maintains liaison with other UN agencies, local authorities and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the mission area. • Keeps up to date on environmental developments. 4. Performs other duties, as assigned.

Education

Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental engineer or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Job – Specific Qualification

Training or certificate in energy systems and renewable energy related field is desirable. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of five (05) years of progressively responsible experience in the scientific and engineering aspects of environmental, energy engineering or related fields is required. Experience in using Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Power Point), MS Project, electric design software is required. Environmental and energy engineering experience in international peacekeeping, post conflict environment, field or military operations is desirable. Experience in using methodologies for project planning, coordination, execution and evaluation of energy standards and proven ability in analytical work is desirable. Experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English, (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of French is desirable.

Assessment

Special Notice

• This position is available for an initial period of 364 days with possibility of extension.
