Position Summary:

Reporting to EHS Manager, the EHS Officer will inspect various teaching, diagnostic and research facilities of the University. The incumbent will be responsible to assist and lead in various tasks of the McGill Prevention Plan related to building and employee health and safety matters.

Develops, implements, and maintains various occupational health and safety programs and procedures, such as hearing loss conservation, respiratory protection, confined space, lock out & tag out (LOTO), working at height, and electrical and machine safety.

Performs tasks related to occupational hygiene work, noise measurements, confined space entry hazard identification and risk assessments, LOTO procedures, accident investigations, and workplace assessments to identify, evaluate and control workplace health risks.
Primary Responsibilities:

  • Plans, schedules, and conducts health and safety inspections audits and spot checks to ensure compliance with the McGill Asbestos Management Plan, the McGill Prevention Plan and other EHS work procedures; generates inspection reports.
  • Conducts walk-throughs across the campus on a regular basis to ensure a safe workplace for the McGill community.
  • Use professional expertise, specialized skills and knowledge when recommending corrective measures where items of non-compliance have been observed and ensure follows up to assess if corrections have been implemented.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of policies and new initiatives that support the strategic direction of the Environmental Health and Safety Mission which includes our EHS Policies and programs.
  • Use professional expertise, specialized skills and knowledge when providing advice on EHS issues related to Special Events that take place on the downtown and Macdonald campuses.
  • Participate in workplace incident investigations related to EHS aspects across the university, determine the cause, and implement corrective measures to prevent recurrence.
  • Respond to emergencies on McGill Campuses (downtown and Macdonald) and reduce impacts for the McGill community.
  • Develop, deliver, and implement site-specific health and safety training in relation to the McGill Prevention Plan and other EHS work procedures to both McGill employees and externally contracted workers.
  • Use professional expertise, specialized skills and knowledge in coaching management, employees, students, and the McGill community on EH&S issues, identifying hazards and assessing the risks and implementing control measures, programs, and initiatives.
  • Participate in CNESST visits to the site and ensure follow ups and corrective actions are documented and completed.
  • Work closely with managers and supervisors of various units and Faculties to identify, report, and effectively address ongoing site EHS concerns and hazards, including unsafe behaviors and conditions, compliance with personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe working procedures, and implementation of necessary measures to prevent or mitigate potential exposures and risks.
  • Enhances health and safety culture through direct and indirect leadership; Conduct behavior-based safety observations.
  • Ensure a strong teamwork relationship with all leaders, program and project managers, field operation manager and EH&S representatives to foster the EHS culture.
  • Work closely with other specialist safety officers on issues related to radiation, laser, bio safety, chemical, occupational hygiene safety.
  • Work closely with the construction Health and safety manager for project management issues; monitoring the implementation of contractor safety management practices and ensuring project/program alignment with McGill University Health and safety requirements.
  • Participate in special projects, initiatives, and campaigns for EHS.
  • Participate and provide professional expertise in the annual review of health and safety documentation, tracking continuous improvement.
  • Keep abreast of new developments and trends in the field of EHS.
  • Participate at meetings, committees, make recommendations and provide solutions in relation to EHS.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

Professional certification in occupational hygiene and Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) preferred.

Proficiency in federal and provincial health and safety regulations

Experience with High Hazard Work Activity, Confined Space, LOTO, and Fall Protection

Experience in the construction or industrial field

Experience in preparing for health and safety management system audits, OHSAS 18001 or ISO 45001 audits.

Ability to multi-task, managing multiple projects.

Ability to work simultaneously on a range of projects requiring different skills and resources and proven ability to meet multiple deadlines.

Ability to work under minimal supervision and as part of a team. Must demonstrate initiative and planning.  

Excellent communication skills including writing and presentation skills as well as the ability to liaise with a variety of internal and external contacts.

Must possess strong interpersonal skills, strong organizational skills and demonstrate attention to detail.  

Ability to work in a PC environment with advanced knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook).

Knowledge of EHS software’s.  

English and French, spoken and written.

Must be available to travel between the downtown and Macdonald campuses.

Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 4 on a scale of 0-4.

Bachelor’s Degree 3 Years Related Experience with Bachelor’s Degree /

Annual Salary:

(MPEX Grade 05) $69,430.00 – $86,790.00 – $104,150.00
