Protecting natural resources within the Quinault Reservation and within Quinault’s Usual and Accustomed Area (U&A) is of great importance to the Quinault People. The Quinault Reservation is located on Washington State’s scenic Olympic Peninsula and includes over 208,000 acres of land and water 25 miles of coastline, and the larger U&A also includes the entire Chehalis River basin and its tributaries in western Washington. This position provides resource protection and monitoring support for staff in a wide variety of Programs, including Air Quality, Water Quality, Invasive Species control, and Wetlands. They work within the Quinault Division of Natural Resource’s (QDNR) Environmental Quality Section, which administers several federally and locally funded restoration or monitoring projects related to air, water and land resources.
Primary Functions:
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in natural resource science, environmental science, or related field, AND 5 years of applicable professional experience.
Must have knowledge or formal training in principles of biological research, report writing, methods of data collection and its applications, and appropriate technological software and applications. Must have ability to serve as a proactive advisor to and collaborator with the EP Manager and Division Director to develop and implement QDNR’s Environmental Quality Section priorities, use sound judgement related to permitting decisions that may impact natural resources, manage multiple budgets, provide inter-program coordination, communicate direction clearly in the field, work collaboratively and safely with others, plan and schedule field tasks, prepare comprehensive and concise reports, recognize and describe adverse implications of natural resources decisions/practices, train and supervise personnel, communicate clearly and effectively, write proposals for competitive grants, and administer grants and contracts. The preferred candidate will have experience in securing financial grants and contract administration, water quality monitoring and field data collection related to water quality, collaborative natural resource management, and experience operating small crafts, such as kayaks and motor boats. The successful candidate must be able to pass a federal background check, and drug screening; hold or have the ability to obtain a valid Washington State driver’s license and have and maintain the ability to be insured under QIN automobile insurance. Candidates must have the ability to work outdoors in inclement weather and rugged terrain.
