The reporting location for this position is at Ocotillo Wells SVRA, located at 5172 Highway 78, Borrego Springs, CA 92004. This position will work under the supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory). The Environmental Scientist will develop and implement natural resources management projects, planning, and stewardship at Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area. This position will develop a monitoring program for western burrowing owl at the park, including developing protocols and leading surveys. The Environmental Scientist will compile data, manage records, analyze results, write reports, and make recommendations for natural resources. Special Qualifications and/or Hiring Requirements:
- The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license is required. You must answer the questions addressing your driver’s license on your application. Ensure you provide your driver’s license number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions on your application.
This position may work up to 1500 hours in any calendar year. This position is designated as not telework eligible. Funding for this position is project-based and may not be renewed beyond December 31, 2027.

State housing may be required. Special Requirement/Condition of Employment: Depending on the assigned location, the incumbent may be required to occupy state-owned housing to meet operational needs or may be offered state-owned housing if available. Housing assignments will be determined in accordance with Department policy, operational priorities, and applicable labor agreements.
Minimum Qualifications: Possession of a bachelor’s or advanced degree with a major in a biological, chemical, physical, or environmental science, soil science, water science, hydrology, agronomy, natural resource science, environmental or public health, physical geography, or a closely related scientific discipline. (Admission to a masters or doctoral degree program in a biological, chemical, physical, or environmental science, soil science, water science, hydrology, agronomy, natural resource science, environmental or public health, physical geography, or a closely related scientific discipline shall be considered to meet these education qualifications.)
