IFC is seeking a motivated Environmental & Social (E&S) Specialist with strong communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills experience primarily to support its Manufacturing, Agribusiness and Services (MAS) business across India and South Asia. This professional will provide E&S guidance to clients and investment and advisory teams on E&S matters vis-à-vis IFC Performance Standards (PS) and Sustainability Policy, with the aim of promoting compliance and enhancing the impact and additionality of IFC-supported business activities.
Roles and Responsibilities
•  Undertake Environmental and Social (E&S) due diligence to identify E&S risks and impacts associated with IFC investments primarily across manufacturing, agribusiness and services (MAS) sectors against the requirements of IFC’s Performance Standards, including identification of mitigation measures to ensure compliance with IFC PS and World Bank Group EHS Guidelines (www.ifc.org/ehsguidelines).
•  Prepare public disclosure documents for new investments as well as other internal documentation in the investment project cycle.
•  Support formulation of E&S legal conditions for IFC projects.
•  Help identify systemic bottlenecks existing in the market that prevent adequate E&S risk management in MAS sub-sectors.
•  Monitor the E&S performance of selected portfolio companies through review of monitoring reports and site visits.
•  Support development of sectoral and regional portfolio reviews and in developing an understanding of systematic compliance issues in the portfolio.
•  Contribute to the design and delivery of learning programs on sustainability and environmental risk management for IFC clients and investment staff.
•  Represent IFC at technical meetings, industry events and E&S fora.

Selection Criteria

 

•  Advanced (Masters) degree in science, engineering, environment, natural resources or similar.
•  Minimum 8-12 years relevant professional experience, including private sector experience in sustainability and E&S risk management and preferable in Manufacturing, Agribusiness and Services sectors. International experience in emerging markets will be advantageous.
•  Experience in one or more areas of E&S risk management, e.g. EHS risk assessment and management; occupational, health and safety; E&S due diligence, environmental audits.
•  Experience working with IFC/World Bank/ADB E&S Policies and Standards.
•  Willingness to travel regularly both inside India and within South Asia.
•  Strong analytical skills, ability to think strategically, analyze and summarize diverse sources and draw conclusions from limited data.
•  Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously under tight deadlines.
•  Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing circumstances, organize and prioritize deliverables, and maintain attention to detail.
•  Ability to communicate effectively and concisely on complex E&S issues in spoken and written form.
•  Proficiency in English essential, with Hindi or other Indian language skills an advantage.
•  Ability to work effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural team, influence and negotiate point of view within teams.
•  High personal integrity and emotional intelligence, with the ability to handle sensitive matters in a discreet and respectful manner, respond diplomatically and remain calm under pressure.
