About the role
In this role, you will be instrumental in facilitating capital works and operational processes across all Uniting activities, ensuring that environmental sustainability objectives are consistently met. As the Environmental Sustainability Officer, you will provide essential support and guidance on sustainability matters to both internal and external stakeholders. Your work will involve managing projects that advance Uniting’s asset management, environmental, and Ecological Sustainable Development (ESD) initiatives. By shaping sustainability strategies, offering expert advice, and ensuring regulatory compliance, you will play a pivotal role in driving Uniting’s commitment to environmental responsibility. This position offers a unique opportunity to make a tangible impact on both the environment and the community.
Key Responsibilities
- Data Analysis & Evaluation: Assist in analysing operational data to support our Manager of Environmental Sustainability in making informed decisions.
- Environmental Management Systems: Help maintain and update our systems regularly, ensuring consistent and accurate input.
- Budgeting & Reporting: Collect and analyse data to aid in budgeting, operations, and the production of reports.
- Specialised Studies: Conduct research and provide insights to support the team’s operations.
- Safety & Compliance: Promote safe work practices and ensure compliance with WH&S legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Inclusivity: Foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive working environment that celebrates diversity in all its forms.
Your Specific Contributions
- Strategic Support: Offer guidance on sustainability issues related to capital works and operational processes, driving continuous improvement across Uniting.
- Project Assistance: Aid in planning and executing projects that align with our environmental, ESD, and sustainability objectives.
- Policy Development: Collaborate with stakeholders to develop and implement sustainability strategies, policies, and reporting processes.
- Training & Engagement: Provide or coordinate training and engagement initiatives on sustainability for staff and clients.
- Regulatory Compliance: Monitor and interpret legal changes, ensuring compliance and identifying potential risks.
- Funding Opportunities: Identify and pursue funding opportunities for environmental initiatives, managing applications and follow-ups.
- Representation: Act as Uniting’s representative on environmental matters at industry forums, community consultations, and public meetings.
Qualifications & Experience
- Educational Background: Degree in Environmental Science or a related technical discipline.
- Experience: 5+ years of experience in environmental sustainability, with a strong understanding of carbon management, climate change risks, and current environmental methodologies.
- Technical Expertise: Knowledge of facilities management, property management, construction, natural areas management, and waste management strategies.
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to navigate complex organisations and manage relationships effectively.
- Project Management: Experience in project management, consumer engagement, and environmental training is highly regarded.

- Postgraduate qualifications in environmental management and/or sustainability. NABERS assessor qualification or energy auditing experience
- ESG reporting understanding and experience
