Environmental Technician 
Environmental Technician (ET) will monitor and control invasive species; assist with proposal and report production; maintain good client and community relations; assist staff in conducting a variety of wetland and ecological studies along with site investigations; support implementation of wetland and stream restoration projects; and collect, manage, and use site data including, but not limited to, photographs, GIS data, and water quality data. Work for this position is primarily in the field and involves regular overnight travel. 

ET Responsibilities: 

  • Collecting, managing, organizing, entering, analyzing, and presenting data, as well as rudimentary statistical analysis/calculations
  • Collecting historical information from relevant sources for projects
  • Applying herbicides, mechanically removing invasives, and other land management techniques for the control of invasive species
  • Surveying and collecting GPS data on existence of invasive species, post processing GPS data; monitoring/updating previous treatments, and using GIS software to create maps
  • Working with contract labor in ensuring quality control on project sites 
  • Complying with federal and state regulations and federal environmental assessments for the control of invasive species
  • Installing and maintaining data collection instrumentation
  • Preparing and maintaining necessary reports and records as required
  • Operating and maintaining equipment for invasive plant species management and planting/seeding (i.e. brush cutters, chainsaws, hand tools)
  • Installing native seeds, plugs, trees, etc. via hand tools and gas-powered augersMaintaining various project logs and databases
  • Performing calibration and routine maintenance on field and laboratory equipment, including maintaining compliance with laws and regulations
  • Performing various administrative duties and assisting with other projects as needed with outdoor exposure and considerable physical exertion
  • Must be able to travel to locations, hike, and conduct fieldwork for extended periods, even in harsh weather, while carrying equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Associate degree, or Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Ecology, Botany, Biology, Wildlife Biology or other related wetland or ecology field
  • Experience recognizing common plant species and an interest in learning more 
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g., Lawn mower, chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radios, or similar equipment) 
  • Experience working in and fostering a team environment 
  • Ability to obtain and maintain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, pesticide application).

  • Ability to work in excessive heat with bugs, ticks, poisonous plants, and potentially venomous snakes
    In possession of a valid driver’s license, safe driving record, and commitment to maintain a good driving record

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate degree or Bachelor of Science degree in botany/plant sciences, forestry, plant ecology, biology or natural resources; strong background in plant identification (including scientific names and using dichotomous keys) and one to two years’ experience in land management or related fields
  • Knowledge of invasive species management techniques and experience working with the careful and conscientious application of herbicides
  • Knowledge of Ohio natural flora and invasive species of the state
  • Experience with GPS units and GIS software 
  • Experience working with or knowledge of natural ecosystems
  • Ability to safely operate and haul equipment (UTVs and ATVs) on a trailer
  • Ability to safely operate electrical and fuel-powered tools and pumps
  • Ability to complete tasks independently and within assigned timeframes
  • Ability to perform administrative duties, emphasizing detail-oriented and numerical tasks
  • Ability to be flexible and quickly adapt to changes
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members
  • PC and/or mobile device familiarity, including database knowledge and understanding 
  • Must be able to travel to locations, hike, and conduct fieldwork for extended periods, even in harsh weather, while carrying equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds
